AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan softball team wrapped up the Texas Invitational on a strong note, avenging an earlier loss to host Texas with a 4-0 shutout win in the tournament finale on Sunday afternoon (Feb. 25) at the Longhorns' Red & Charline McCombs Field.
Freshman LHP Meghan Beaubien (7-2) earned her fourth complete-game shutout of the season -- and second of the weekend -- with a seven-strikeout, three-hit effort against the Longhorns. All but one of the Wolverines' wins this season have been shutouts; Beaubien has contributed to them all.
Michigan used four hits and three free bases to plate all four of its runs in the second inning. Sophomore shortstop Madison Uden led off with a bunt single down the third-base line, and after another single and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, senior pinch-hitter Amanda Vargas drew a full-count walk -- on eight pitches -- to push across the first and game-winning run.
Junior second baseman Faith Canfield drove in another on a fielder's choice, then stole second to put two in scoring position and scored when junior center fielder Natalie Peters blooped a two-run single off the glove of the Longhorns' leaping shortstop.
With the four-run cushion, Beaubien got stronger as the game wore on, but Texas did put runners on third base to threaten in both the fifth and sixth innings -- with just one out in the latter frame. The Wolverine rookie hurled back-to-back strikeouts to get out of the jam, then retired the Longhorns in order in the seventh to end the game.
Michigan (8-6) will head directly to Fullerton, California, for the second half of its spring-break trip at the annual Judi Garman Classic later this weekend. The Wolverines kick off their five-game slate with a pair of games on Thursday (March 1), taking on Loyola Marymount at 9:30 a.m. PST and Charlotte at noon at Cal State Fullerton's Anderson Family Field.
