
Olympic Ice Hockey Updates: Ebbett, Canada Pick Up Bronze Medal

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea -- MGoBlue.com will track the progress of University of Michigan ice hockey alumni and first-time Olympians Andrew Ebbett (Canada) and Chad Kolarik (USA) at the 2018 Winter Olympics, with the men's ice hockey competition running Feb.14-25. Ebbett (2003-06) and Kolarik (2005-08), who are both playing professionally in Europe, are the 15th and 16th Wolverines to compete in hockey at the Winter Olympics.
Saturday, Feb. 24
Andrew Ebbett registered a pair of goals -- his first tallies of his first Olympics -- to help Canada pick up the bronze medal with a 6-4 win over the Czech Republic. Ebbett was credited with the game's first goal on a power-play deflection 8:57 into the first period. That started a flurry of three goals in less than a minute, as the Czechs scored at 9:13 and Canada responded just 15 seconds later. Derek Roy's tally at 15:57 gave the Canadians a 3-1 edge after 20 minutes. Followig a scoreless second period, Ebbett struck again 5:50 into the third, and Canada eventually stretched its advantage to four, 6-2, with 4:37 to play before hanging on for the win. » Full Story

Friday, Feb. 23
Andrew Ebbett saw 16:22 minutes of action and had two third-period shots in Canada's 4-3 semifinal loss to Germany. The Germans scored first off the stick of Brooks Macek on the power play and took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Germany added two more goals before Canada's Gilbert Brule capitalized on a power play midway through the second period. After another German goal prior to the end of the second stanza, Canada scored twice early in the final period to cut the deficit to one. Despite multiple scoring chances by Canada in the final minutes, Germany held on to advance to the gold medal game to play Olympic Athletes from Russia. Canada will play the Czech Republic, a 3-0 semifinal loser to OAR, for the bronze Saturday (Feb. 24, 7:10 a.m. EST).
Wednesday, Feb. 21
Andrew Ebbett recorded 14:32 minutes of play with two shots in Canada's 1-0 quarterfinal win over Finland. The score remained scoreless through the first two periods of play. The breakthrough goal came 55 seconds into the final period with Maxim Noreau finding the back of the net at the point off a faceoff. Canada will play Germany in one semifinal Friday (7:10 a.m. EST), while the Russians will face the Czechs in the other.
Chad Kolarik was scratched in Team USA's 3-2 shootout loss to Czech Republic in the quarterfinals. With the loss, USA has concluded its tournament with a 2-1-0-2 overall record. Ryan Donato opened the scoring 6:20 into the first period for a 1-0 lead, but less than nine minutes later Jan Kolar leveled the score at 1-1. The Czechs broke on top early in the second period on a Tomas Kundratek goal at 28:14, but Team USA answered two minutes later shorthanded by Brian O'Neill to make it 2-2 at the 30:23 mark. The teams went into the 10-minute sudden victory overtime with the Americans having several scoring opportunities come up short. Petr Koukal, the second to shoot for the Czechs, beat Team USA's Ryan Zapolski to score the only goal in the ensuing penalty shootout to eliminate the Americans.
Tuesday, Feb. 20
Chad Kolarik did not dress in Team USA's 5-1 win over Slovakia in the qualification round. Ryan Donato put Team USA on the board 1:36 into the second period, followed by a 5-on-3 power-play goal by James Wisniewski. Mark Arcobello extended the USA lead at 33:30 to push the margin to 3-0, but Slovakia pulled a goal back when Peter Ceresnak scored on a power play three minutes before the second intermission. Garrett Roe added a goal in the final frame, and Donato scored his second goal of the game to put the game out of reach. Team USA moves on to the quarterfinal round to meet the Czech Republic in a game that will start at 10:10 p.m. EST Tuesday.
Sunday, Feb. 18
Andrew Ebbett sat out Canada's 4-0 win over host South Korea that secured the Canadians the fourth and final bye into the quarterfinal round. Christian Thomas opened the scoring for Canada at 7:36 of the first period, while Eric O'Dell made it 2-0 in the second before goals from Maxime Lapierre and Gilbert Brule sealed it in the third period. Team Canada will face the winner of a qualification-round game between Finland and South Korea on Wednesday (Feb. 21) at 7:10 a.m. EST.
Team USA, which finished third in Group B, will play Slovakia in a playoff qualification game that will start at 10:10 p.m. EST on Monday (Feb. 19). The winner of that contest will advance to play Czech Republic, winner of Group A, in the quarterfinal round. The Americans defeated Slovakia, 2-1, during group play (Feb. 16).
Saturday, Feb. 17
Andrew Ebbett recorded 16:53 minutes of ice time with four shots in Canada's 3-2 shootout loss to Czech Republic at Kwandong Hockey Centre. In its first loss in Olympic play since Vancouver 2010, Canada scored 1:13 into the contest on the power play, but the Czechs pushed back and tied it by the seven-minute mark. After going down 2-1 at 13:30 of the first, the Czechs scored 25 seconds into the second period and it was an even contest the rest of the way. Petr Koukal and Jan Kouvar each found the back of the net in the shootout to secure the win for Czech Republic. Canada sits in second place in Group A with four points and a 1-0-1-0 record.
Chad Kolarik totaled 4:22 minutes of ice time, primarily playing on the special team's unit, in Team USA's 4-0 loss to Olympic Athletes of Russia (OAR). The OAR broke open the scoring in the first period when Nikolai Prokhorkin found the net at 7:21. The second period saw the OAR run out to a 3-0 advantage as Prokhorkin netted his second at 22:14, followed by Ilya Kovalchuk's goal with one second remaining in the period. Kovalchuk maintained his scoring momentum over the second intermission, finding the net again just 32 seconds into the third period. Team USA held a slight advantage in shots, 29-26, as the teams successfully killed five power plays each. Team USA finished third in Group B and now must wait to see where it will fall in the bracket for next week's knockout round.
Friday, Feb. 16
Chad Kolarik logged 11:34 minutes of ice time with one recorded shot on net in his Olympic debut as USA defeated Slovakia, 2-1, at Kwandong Hockey Centre. Ryan Donato put the Americans up at the 7:10 mark of the first period with a power-play goal, but that lead lasted only 25 seconds. Andrej Kudrna equalized at 7:35, and the teams remained even until the third period. Donato tallied his second power-play goal of the contest less than three minutes into the third period. The Red, White and Blue moved to the top of the table in Group B with four points (one win, one overtime loss).
Thursday, Feb. 15
Andrew Ebbett recorded one assist in his Olympic debut as Canada claimed a 5-1 win over Switzerland at the Kwandong Hockey Centre in its first game of the tournament. The Canadians scored twice in the first eight minutes and never looked back, winning their 11th consecutive Olympic game. Rene Bourque and Wojtek Wolski scored two goals apiece. Ebbett, who assisted on Wolski's empty-netter to close the scoring, was tied for third on the team with three shots on goal and logged 15:03 of ice time.
Wednesday, Feb. 14
Chad Kolarik was a healthy scratch as Team USA suffered an overtime loss to Slovenia its first game after two late-stage goals from Jan Mursak at Kwandong Hockey Centre. The Stars and Stripes held the lead through the first two periods on goals from Brian O'Neil and Jordan Greenway but were forced into overtime after Mursak scored with less than two minutes remaining in regulation. Less than a minute into OT, Mursak struck again off a 1-2 pass from Rok Ticar to earn the extra point in the tournament for Slovenia.
