CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team forced third sets at three singles spots, but it was not enough as No. 1-ranked North Carolina took a 4-1 win on Sunday (Feb. 18) at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.
Michigan jumped out to 3-0 leads at both No. 1 and No. 2 in doubles action, but UNC won the final six games at the top spot in a 6-3 win. At No. 2, senior Mira Ruder-Hook and junior Brienne Minor evened the doubles score at one match each with a 6-4 victory.
UNC clinched the doubles point moments later with a 6-2 win at No. 3, giving the Tar Heels the early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, Michigan got first-set wins from junior Kate Fahey at the top spot and from freshman Alyvia Jones at No. 4.
North Carolina came away with straight-sets wins at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 2 to clinch the win. Fahey wrapped up a straight-sets win at No. 1 with a 7-6, 6-1 victory over No. 6 Alle Sanford to give Michigan one point on the afternoon.
At the same time, Minor came back from a 6-1 first- set loss to force a third set. Michigan was also heading to a third set at No. 4, but the match was abandoned after North Carolina put its fourth point on the board.
Michigan will take a week off before heading to Florida over spring break, culminating with a match at the University of Central Florida on March 3. The match will be played at the USTA National Campus and begin at 12:30 p.m., and will be televised on Tennis Channel.
