LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior/junior Myles Amine captured the 174-pound crown to headline the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's fifth-place finish (82.5 points) at the 37th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational, which concluded Saturday (Dec. 1) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Wolverines had four total placewinners and drew scoring performances from eight representatives.
Amine, the top seed and No. 3-ranked nationally, used a late reversal to ice a 10-7 decision over Missouri's fourth-ranked Daniel Lewis in the championship bout. Amine controlled the bulk of the bout, earning single-leg takedowns in the first and second periods and a reversal in the first, but Lewis finished on a takedown of his own to even the score at 7 midway through the third. Lewis twice dropped down on an ankle, however, to give Amine a stall point, and the Wolverine captain iced the bout with a late reversal. It was Amine's second collegiate win over Lewis; he earned an overtime decision in the third-place bout at NCAAs last season.
Amine captured his first CKLV crown after previously claiming third in his first two appearances. He boasts an 18-2 record at the annual tournament over the last three seasons, including a perfect 6-0 mark this year. Among Amine's wins were three over ranked opponents. He defeated Nebraska's 11th-ranked Mikey Labriola, 5-1, in the semifinals behind a second-period takedown and 2:14 riding-time advantage.
Junior/sophomore Kanen Storr, seeded ninth and ranked 19th nationally at 141 pounds, registered a 6-1 tournament record en route to third place, with three wins over ranked opponents, including a 5-2 decision over Oklahoma's 15th-ranked Dom Demas in the third-place bout. Storr scored two takedowns in the medal match -- one with just three seconds remaining in the first and another double leg in the second. Storr, who transferred into Michigan over the summer, placed eighth at the CKLV last season for Iowa State. He also defeated Northern Iowa's 11th-ranked Josh Alber, 6-3, in the consolation semifinals behind takedowns in the second and third periods and 1:02 in riding time.
Senior/junior Logan Massa, seeded No. 1 and ranked fifth nationally, took fourth place at 165 pounds with a 5-2 record. He dropped a pair of close losses on the day, including a 6-2 decision to eventual champion Isaiah White of Nebraska in the semifinals -- after getting hit with a hands-to-the-face call in the second and allowing a pair of reshot takedowns in the third. He defeated Wyoming's sixth-ranked Branson Ashworth, 3-2, in the consolation semifinals, scoring on a late takedown in the first and giving up an escape and riding time, which Ashworth accumulated while Massa spent most of the second period working towards a reversal.
Sophomore Drew Mattin, seeded eighth and ranked 16th nationally, took advantage of his top game to earn a pair of top-10 wins on the second day of competition en route to fifth place at 125 pounds. He edged Illinois' 10th-ranked Travis Piotrowski, 2-2, in the second tiebreaker of the fifth-place bout on five seconds of riding time, avenging a pair of losses to Piotrowski at last season's Big Ten Championships. Mattin also earned a 3-1 decision against Nebraska's ninth-ranked Zeke Moisey behind a second-period rideout and reversal early in the third. In all, Mattin went 5-2 in the tournament to earn his second straight top-five CKLV finish.
The Wolverines will wrap up first-semester competition at home next Sunday (Dec. 9) when they host Indiana in their Big Ten Conference dual opener at 2 p.m. at Cliff Keen Arena. Tickets are available through the U-M Ticket Office.
