LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Senior/juniors Logan Massa and Myles Amine advanced to the semifinals at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, to headline the No. 5-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team's first day of competition at the 37th annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Friday (Nov. 30) at the Las Vegas Convention Center. With three additional Wolverines still alive in the consolation bracket, U-M sits in fifth place with 48.5 points.
Massa, the top seed at 165 pounds, rolled into the semifinals with two technical falls and a major decision, outscoring his first-day competition by a combined 46-5 margin. He earned his most lopsided win in the quarterfinals, cruising to an 18-0 tech over Utah Valley's No. 8 seeded -- and 13th-ranked -- Demetrius Romero in just 4:24 on a first-period takedown and four sets of near fall off a bow and arrow. Massa is a previous CKLV champion, capturing the 165-pound title as a freshman in 2016.
Amine, the top seed at 174 pounds, posted a 4-0 record on the day -- with a pair of major decisions -- to reach the semifinals for the second straight year. He defeated Duke's 18th-ranked Matt Finesilver, 11-5, in the quarterfinals, controlling from start to finish with four takedowns -- two in the first period -- a reversal and 1:54 riding time. Amine is a two-time third-place finisher at the CKLV tournament.
Michigan went 2-for-4 in the quarterfinal round, with sophomore Drew Mattin and junior/sophomore Kanen Storr dropping close decision losses to a pair of top-two seeded opponents.
Mattin, the eight seed at 125 pounds, struck first against top-seed -- and second-ranked -- Sebastian Rivera of Northwestern, but could not hang on, falling, 5-2, after a late Wildcat takedown in the first and third-period rideout. Mattin earned a ranked win in the second round with a 10-3 comeback decision against Stanford's 15th-ranked Gabe Townsell, after earning the bulk of his points in the first period, countering a Townsell cement mixer attempt to put him on his back for six points.
Storr, the 10 seed at 141 pounds, was one second shy of pulling an upset against No. 2-seeded -- and third-ranked -- Jaydin Eierman in the quarterfinals, falling, 3-2, in the second tiebreaker. Both wrestlers rode out in the first tiebreaker, and Eierman escaped quickly in the second, which prompted a subsequent neutral start from Storr, who shot in deep on a single leg late in the 30-second frame and planted Eierman -- but just a second after the final buzzer sounded. Storr also went to the tiebreaker in the second round, where he edged Nebraska's 10th-ranked Chad Red, 2-1.
The Wolverines earned bonus points in 12 matches, including all three pigtails to start the day, but were without any pins. Massa paced U-M with his three bonus wins, while sophomore/freshman Jelani Embree also earned three with one technical fall and two major decisions at 184 pounds. Embree went 4-1 on the day to advance into Saturday's (Dec. 1) consolation round 12. His most lopsided win came in his first wrestleback match, where he used four takedowns and eight back points to beat Cal State Bakersfield's Dominic Ducharme, 22-2.
Michigan will return to action Saturday (Dec. 1) for the second and final day of competition at the 2018 Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, Nevada. U-M will hit the mat at 9 a.m. PST for the semifinals and continued wrestleback rounds, while the championships finals are slated for a 3 p.m. PST start. All matches will take place at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
