ATHENS, Ga. -- Junior Charlie Swanson, sophomore Ross Todd and freshman Patrick Callan each won events to pace the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team on Friday (Nov. 30) at the UGA Fall Invitational. After two days, U-M is in second place (715 points), trailing Cal by 76 points.
"The conversation we have throughout every session is that everyone matters, everyone counts," said head coach Mike Bottom. "We've had some ups and downs here. Everyone that has fallen down has gotten back up, and we'll expect that to continue tomorrow. We're setting ourselves up for the end of the year where everyone scores points for Michigan."
The distance group had another strong showing in the 400-yard individual medley, posting five NCAA 'B' cuts during the morning preliminaries. Junior Tommy Cope actually posted the fastest time of the morning (3:42.65), but scratched out of finals. Swanson took home the win in dominant fashion, beating Cal's Sean Grieshop by over three seconds. His time of 3:39.58 missed the NCAA 'A' standard by just two-tenths of a second, and was within a half-second of his previous career best, set this past spring at the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Ricardo Vargas joined him in the final, taking fourth (3:45.04).
The Wolverines dominated the 200-yard freestyle, holding five lanes in the final. Callan was the king of the field, winning in 1:33.89, the ninth-fastest time in school history, behind Olympian Connor Jaeger. Four others fell in behind him: senior Mokhtar Al-Yamani in third (1:35.51), senior Kai Williams in sixth (1:36.62), sophomore Dylan Boyd in seventh (1:37.57) and Vargas in eighth (1:38.15).
Todd won his second springboard event in as many days, taking the three-meter title on Friday (388.25). All four U-M divers placed in the top eight, with junior Jake Herremans in third (350.55), senior/junior Collin DeShaw in fifth (338.85) and sophomore Chris Canning in seventh (306.55).
Four juniors made the final of the 100-yard breaststroke, with three placing inside the top five. Jacob Montague was third (52.89), Cope was fourth (53.12; seventh-fastest time in school history) and Jeremy Babinet was fifth (53.25). Swanson scratched after winning the 400-yard IM earlier in the evening, though his time from the morning -- 53.33 -- is now eighth-best in school history.
Junior Miles Smachlo went nearly the same times in both of his swims of the 100-yard butterfly, finishing fifth in the evening's final (46.06). His time of 46.05 during the morning's preliminaries was eighth-fastest in school history. Classmate James Jones shaved time and moved up to win the consolation final, placing ninth (46.90).
Some scratches ahead of them allowed Williams and senior Jon Burkett opportunities to swim in the final of the 100-yard backstroke. Burkett was sixth (47.96), while Williams was eighth (48.40).
Junior Felix Auböck, Callan, Al-Yamani and sophomore Luiz Gustavo Borges finished second in the 800-yard freestyle relay, missing the NCAA 'A' cut by about three-tenths of a second (6:18.79).
The UGA Fall Invitational concludes Saturday (Dec. 1) with preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. and finals at 3 p.m.
