EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 7-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team could not overcome a slow  start to its Big Ten Conference Tournament semifinal, falling to No. 8 Iowa, 2-1, on Friday afternoon (Nov. 2) at Northwestern's Lakeside Field.
Senior Emma Way scored midway through the second half, at the 48:51 mark, to pull the Wolverines within one, and Michigan drew four consecutive penalty corners with time expired in regulation but could not push across the equalizer.
Iowa's goals came early in each half, including the first and game-winning tally from Mya Christopher at the 7:05 mark off a tight-angle shot from the left-side baseline carry. Makenna Grewe added the Hawkeyes' insurance at 42:37, tipping a shot in from the right post.
Way's goal was her team-best 18th of the season and completed a ping-pong play through the Iowa circle. Sophomore Kayla Reed hammered the ball into the circle off a free hit from the right side; it hit off junior Meg Dowthwaite's stick toward the front of the cage, where it knocked off Way's stick and in.
Iowa outshot the Wolverines, 13-4, while Michigan held a 6-3 advantage in corners. Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker posted seven saves, while the Hawkeyes' Leslie Speight made three stops.
Michigan will await the NCAA Tournament selections on Sunday (Nov. 4) at 10 p.m. The 16-team tournament opens with first- and second-round matches Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 10-11, at four campus sites to be announced. The selection show will be streamed live on NCAA.com.
