ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team hosted its annual Maize & Blue Intrasquad dual on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 28) at Cliff Keen Arena. The Maize team used a couple bonus wins to claim the exhibition dual, 15-9.
Seven weight classes and nine total matches were contested. The intrasquad dual serves as a component of the preseason wrestle-offs to determine the Wolverines' starting lineup. Preliminary matches were held on Friday afternoon (Oct. 26) inside the Bahna Wrestling Center. Additional wrestle-offs could happen at a later date, while decisions on potential redshirts will be an ongoing process over the first semester.
Sophomore Drew Mattin earned a 5-0 decision win over senior/junior Austin Assad at 125 pounds. Mattin, a 2018 NCAA qualifier as a true freshman, scored takedowns in the first and second periods and accumulated 1:29 in riding-time advantage.
Junior/sophomore Kanen Storr rallied to defeat freshman Michael Mars, 7-4, in an exhibition match at 141 pounds behind a second-period reversal and two takedowns in the third. Storr transferred to Michigan from Iowa State over the summer and is set to make his Maize and Blue debut this season.
Both 149 and 157 pounds saw a pair of intrasquad bouts, with fifth-year senior Malik Amine claiming both at the former weight and fifth-year senior Alec Pantaleo and freshman Will Lewan splitting two at the latter. Amine narrowly defeated senior/junior Ben Lamantia, 3-1 and 2-1, with a first-period takedown in the first bout and nearly six minutes of combined riding time. Lewan, a 2017 Cadet freestyle world champion, took the first match at 157 pounds, 2-1, on a pair of escapes after a third-period injury timeout. Pantaleo iced a 4-2 decision in the second match with a second-period takedown and a third-period stall point.
Sophomore/freshman Jelani Embree cruised to a 15-0 technical fall over freshman Sebastian Rawls with a takedown and 12 back points in 2:57 of the 184-pound match.
