MANHEIM, Pa. -- University of Michigan redshirt junior Myles Amine has been selected to participate in the National Wrestling Coaches Association's 53rd annual All-Star Classic, scheduled for Friday, Nov. 2, at the National Wrestling Complex in Denver, Colorado.
The NWCA All-Star Classic showcases some of the nation's top collegiate wrestlers as they are pitted against each other in challenge matches. These matches are often seen as a preview of the NCAA Championships.
Amine, a two-time NCAA All-American at 174 pounds, will face Oklahoma State fifth-year senior Jacobe Smith in the 174-pound contest. Like Amine, Smith will make his first appearance at the annual all-star event. It will be the first collegiate meeting between the two wrestlers.
Amine went 26-7 last year and carries an impressive 71-16 career record at Michigan. He has placed top four at the NCAA Championships in each of his two varsity seasons, claiming fourth as a freshman and third last year as a sophomore. He also has never finished worse than third at the Big Ten and Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational tournaments. Amine is the 40th Michigan wrestler to earn a NWCA All-Star selection and seventh over the last three seasons.
Smith posted 22-8 in his first year in the Cowboy lineup last season and earned All-America honors after placing eighth at 174 pounds. He previously captured two NJCAA national titles at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M before transferring to Oklahoma State.
Michigan will informally kick off its 2018-19 season with the annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad at 2 p.m. this Sunday (Oct. 28) at Cliff Keen Arena. Admission to the intrasquad is free. The Wolverines' official home opener will be Friday, Nov. 16, when they host Lehigh at 7 p.m. at Crisler Center.
