CARROLLTON, Texas -- Led by junior Brent Ito for the second straight event and his tie for 36th individually, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted a team total of 916 Tuesday (Oct. 23) to close its fall season with a 14th-place showing at Baylor's Royal Oaks Intercollegiate held at the Maridoe Golf Club.
"We had a frustrating week to be sure," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "The golf course was the most challenging I've seen in a very long time, even with good conditions. We played poorly, and the course magnified things.
"We're a much better team than we showed here, and we will sharpen our skills and reset. As we head toward offseason development, the guys will have all the motivation in the world with the big majority of our season yet to come and all of our goals in front of us."
Originally scheduled for Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas, the course was deemed unplayable following torrential rains prior to the start of the event, forcing the event to Carrollton and the Maridoe Golf Club. In addition to the course change, the tournament's format was played with all five starters on the same hole together.
Using the unique scoring format, the Wolverines began their fifth appearance at Baylor's event posting a 306 team total in Monday's (Oct. 22) first round. As the Maize and Blue moved into the second round, the sunlight began to leave quickly as U-M was able to get through 14 holes before darkness forced play to be suspended until Tuesday morning.
Returning the Meridoe Golf Club, U-M closed out its final round dropping four shots and posting a 302. Immediately moving into the final round, the Wolverines finished the 54-hole event with a 310 final round tally and a 918 team total to finish in 14th in the fall finale.
For a second straight event, Ito was the top-finishing Wolverine as he tied for 36th with a total of 223 (74-71-78). He was followed by senior Nick Carlson, who tied for 54th at 230 (78-74-78), while sophomore Henry Spring tied for 60th at 232 (76-79-77).
After playing four fall events in the first six weeks of the season, the Wolverines will begin their winter training over the next three months. The next time U-M will hit the links for competition will be in early February at the annual Big Ten Match Play Championships (Feb. 8-9) at the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Florida.
