EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Senior Noah Kleedtke scored the equalizing goal in the 78th minute to secure a point for the University of Michigan men's soccer team in a 1-1, double-overtime draw at No. 12 Michigan State at DeMartin Soccer Complex. It is the first draw between the two teams since 2006.
Though the Wolverines were kept off the scoreboard in the first half, they were very active in the final third, pressuring the Michigan State defense with seven shots, including four on goal. The first one came in the opening minute of the match, when Kleedtke tried bending one into the bottom-left corner, but MSU goalkeeper Jimmy Hague was there to make the save.
In the 14th minute, senior Robbie Mertz laid the ball off to senior Marcello Borges. The defender took a few touches, cut inside and fired one with his right foot for the top-right corner. Hague made a nice save, tipping it over the crossbar. The bar came into play again three minutes later when junior Jack Hallahan, off a counter attack from junior Lucas Rosendall, clanged his shot off of it. Â
The Spartans appeared to put one in the net off a corner kick, but sophomore Henry Mashburn was sent to the deck by an attacker, drawing the foul and negating the goal. In the 33rd minute, Hallahan won a free kick right on the edge of the 18-yard box and went near post, but Hague was there again to deny the chance.
Michigan State got on the board in the 51st minute on a goal from Jack Beck. A service came into the box and Mukuna got a foot on it to temporarily clear it, but Beck ran up on it and placed it past Mashburn to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines kept searching for the equalizer and found it in the 78th minute. Sophomore Austin Swiech sent in a shot into the area that Hague tried to punch away, but his attempt fluttered at the back post. Kleedtke got around a Spartans defender and poked it in, leveling the match at 1. Michigan had one final chance in regulation, but a Swiech chance in the 86th minute off another Ybarra corner was pawed away by Hague.
The Spartans had the first quality chance in the opening overtime period, but Farai Mutatu's shot was punched away by Mashburn. The next minute, Hallahan took it to the end line and sent in a cross in front of the face of goal, but nobody could connect on the other end. Sophomore Umar Farouk Osman had two chances in the final minute of the second overtime, but both of his shots sailed high of the net.
Mashburn was solid in net, making four saves in the draw.
The Wolverines will cap the regular season on Sunday (Oct. 28), when they host Maryland at U-M Soccer Stadium. The match will begin at 4 p.m. and will be televised live on the Big Ten Network. Prior to the match, the program will honor its six-man senior class on the field in a special ceremony.
