ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Junior Jack Hallahan scored the golden goal just 33 seconds into overtime to lift the University of Michigan men's soccer team to a 2-1 win over Maryland on Sunday (Oct. 28) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The win brought Michigan to 10 wins on the season, reaching double-digit victories in consecutive years for the first time since the 2009-10 seasons. Additionally, the Wolverines finished the regular season tied with Michigan State for third in the Big Ten standings (14 points), and will host a Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal match at U-M Soccer Stadium next Sunday (Nov. 4).
Despite being down three starters and playing on a slick field with rain pouring throughout the match, the Wolverines took it to the Terrapins at the outset, controlling possession and creating chances. In the sixth minute, senior Robbie Mertz fed a ball in behind the back line to senior Noah Kleedtke. His cross into the box found junior Lucas Rosendall, but he was unable to direct his touch on frame. In the 13th minute, Kleedtke found himself wide open at the top of the box. He took a touch and brought it on his right foot, but his shot was directed right at Maryland goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair.
Hallahan remained active around the net throughout the first half. In the 25th minute, he took the ball to the end line, cut back in on his left foot and put a shot on frame that was scooped up by St. Clair. The Wolverines found their well-deserved breakthrough in the 34th minute, but got some assistance, as a Hallahan cross intended for Kleedtke was headed into the net by Maryland's Donovan Pines.
The Wolverines had a golden chance to go up 2-0 in the opening minutes of the second half. In the 48th minute, Michigan had a 3-on-1 advantage on the counter attack. Mertz put a shot on goal with his left foot that beat St. Clair, but Terrapins defender Matt Di Rosa charged back to clear it off the line, preventing the goal.
Maryland found the equalizer in the 78th minute. Off a corner kick, Pines headed the ball down that ricocheted off the crossbar. The rebound was slotted into the net by Brett St. Martin to tie the match at 1.
Playing its third consecutive overtime match, Michigan did not waste any time ending it. Mertz won a second ball off a throw in and played a perfect ball to Hallahan, who was running in behind the Maryland defense. The Englishman ran onto it and shot it into the left corner past St. Clair, ending the match just 33 seconds into overtime.
It was Hallahan's 20th career goal, putting him in sole possession of eighth on the school's all-time leaderboard. The goal sent him to 54 career points, also eighth-best in school history.
Sophomore Henry Mashburn was magnificent in net, making six saves, a career high.
With the win, Michigan finished in a tie for third with Michigan State (14 points), though the Wolverines earned the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament via goal differential. U-M will host No. 6 seed Penn State next Sunday (Nov. 4) at U-M Soccer Stadium in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. The match will begin at 1 p.m. The two teams played to a 1-1 (2OT) draw back on Sept. 21.
