CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Using a top-20 performance from sophomore Ashley Kim, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted its second straight 300 team tally on Sunday (Oct. 14) to produce a season-low 902 team total and finish 14th at North Carolina's Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational played at the Finley Golf Course.
"As a team, we are close," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "The biggest difference is our consistency with the simple things like our wedge play and speed control with our longer putts. Everybody and every team is going to mishit iron shots and we have to do a better job in remaining confident in our games and ourselves. The team had another great test against some talented teams. Our standard is high on this team, and we will get back to work for our final event of the fall."
Before even teeing off, U-M knew it was in for yet another fall challenge as the 18-team field was loaded with some of the top teams from around the nation -- including four of the top 10 teams and 11 of 18 teams ranked among the top 75 nationally.
In Friday's open 18 holes, which was pushed back to a noon start following Hurricane Michael storms rolling through the area, Kim used four birdies to post a new season-low 71 (-1), while freshman Ashley Lau posted the first of two rounds of 76. With those two tallies, U-M positioned itself 15th with a 302 opening team tally.
The Ashleys flipped positions in the second round as Lau led with an even-par 72, while Kim followed with a 73 to help U-M post a 300 and move up two spots to 13th after 36 holes. In Sunday's final 18, junior Alisa Snyder helped U-M to a second straight 300 as she carded a 73 (+1), while Kim closed with a 75 and Lau fired a second 76. With a 902 total, the Wolverines finished 14th.
Tying for 20th with a near career-best 54-hole total of 219 (71-73-75), Kim led U-M with her second top-20 finish of the season, doubling her career total to four. Kim just missed her career best of 218 by a single shot. Lau followed tying for 43rd with a new career low by three shots with her 224 (76-72-76), while Snyder's final-round 73 helped her to tie for 54th at 226 (77-76-73).
U-M will conclude its fall season heading back to North Carolina for the Landfall Tradition, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 26-28. Wake Forest and UNC Wilmington will host the three-day event at the prestigious Country Club of Landfall. The Maize and Blue, which finished 11th last season, will make its second straight trip -- and sixth overall -- to the fall-closing event.
