ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team is set to host the U.S. National Team Development Program U-18 team on Friday (Oct. 12) for its annual exhibition contest. Puck drop from Red Berenson Rink at Yost Ice Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
Promotions
Michigan welcomes back the 1998 NCAA National Championship team as it will celebrate its 20th anniversary of raising into the rafters the Wolverines' ninth championship banner in program history. Along with being recognized during the first intermission of Friday's game, the team also will be recognized at Saturday night's football game vs. Wisconsin.
The U.S. NTDP Series
Friday's game will be the 19th between the Wolverines and the U.S. National Team Development Program. U-M leads the all-time series against the USNTDP team, 16-2-0. In last year's meeting at USA Hockey Arena (Plymouth, Michigan), the Wolverines came out on top, 7-3. Former captain Tony Calderone netted a hat trick while former NTDPers Will Lockwood and Nick Pastujov each added a goal.
About the U.S. National Team Development Program
Started in 1996, in an effort to help USA Hockey national teams, the USNTDP produces some of the best American hockey players including 290 overall NHL Draft picks and 67 first-round choices. The program began in Ann Arbor at the Ice Cube before moving to its new home in Plymouth at USA Hockey Arena (Formerly Compuware Arena of the OHL's Plymouth Whalers) in 2015.
Michigan USNTDP Connection
The NTDP has produced 47 Michigan players, including current seniors Brendan Warren and Nicholas Boka, juniors Nick Pastujov, Will Lockwood, Griffin Luce and Luke Martin, and sophomores Josh Norris, Quinn Hughes and Michael Pastujov.
Notable Alums
Some of the most notable recent Michigan alumni are also NTDP alumni. Dylan Larkin, Zach Werenski and Andrew Copp each spent two seasons with the National Team Development Program before making the move to Yost and onto the NHL.
Recent Success
The U.S. National Under-18 Team had a historic Under-17 year last season and looks to continue the success this year. The U18s are coming off their first collegiate win of the season, a 4-2 win, at No. 4 Notre Dame last Sunday (Oct. 7).
In the Polls
The Wolverines check in at No. 9 in the latest USCHO.com Poll, while coming in at No. 8 in the USA Today/USA Hockey weekly poll.
For Matzka
On Friday, Oct. 26, Michigan will host its annual ALS Awareness Game as the program shows its support of former Michigan hockey player Scott Matzka (1997-2001) in his fight against ALS.
Up Ahead
The Wolverines will return to regular-season action next weekend (Oct. 19-20) when they play a home-and-home series with in-state foe Western Michigan. The Broncos took the last meeting between the two programs, 3-2 in overtime at the 2013 Great Lakes Invitational played at Comerica Park.
