ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team continued its strong singles play, getting five wins on the second day of action at the Michigan Invitational on Sunday (Jan. 14) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan went 5-3 in singles action to move its record to 11-5 on the weekend, picking up four wins against No. 7 Georgia Tech and one victory over No. 13 Ohio State.
Freshman Alyvia Jones made quick work of her match, knocking off Georgia Tech's Kenya Jones in straight sets (6-0, 6-2). After not dropping a game in the first set, Michigan's Jones found herself tied at 2 with the Georgia Tech's Jones. It was all Maize and Blue from there as the freshman ripped off four straight games to take the match.
Freshman Bella Lorenzini was next off court, dropping just four games in a 6-2, 6-2 win over GT's Nadia Gizdova.
Sophomore Lera Patiuk picked up her second win of the weekend, coming through with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vicky Flores of Georgia Tech. Patiuk took advantage of a late break in the first set and carried that momentum into the second to move to 2-0 at the Invite.
Senior Mira Ruder-Hook grabbed her first victory of the tournament with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Emma DeCoste of Ohio State.
Junior Kate Fahey got the win over No. 89 Ida Jarlskog, knocking off in straight sets her first ranked opponent of the weekend, 6-2, 6-3. Fahey raced out to a 4-1 lead in the first set and never looked back, dropping just five games on the afternoon.
Michigan dropped both doubles matches earlier in the afternoon to No. 8 Texas Tech.
The Wolverines conclude the Michigan Invitational Monday (Jan. 15), playing Arizona State in doubles at 11:30 a.m. U-M will face Texas Tech in singles at the conclusion of doubles action.
