ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won five singles matches and two doubles matches on the final day of competition at the Michigan Invitational on Monday (Jan. 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Junior Kate Fahey highlighted the final day of competition, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (2) win over No. 5 Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech. Fahey was down 4-2 in the third set before winning two straight games to get back on serve at 4-4. She was broken in the next game, sending Talaba back to the service line with a chance to serve out the match. Fahey fought off a match point on the deuce point as the match eventually headed to a breaker. The Wolverine dropped the first point of that before ripping off five straight points for a 5-1 lead en route to a 7-2 tiebreak win.
Sophomore Chiara Lommer came back for a solid three-set win, rallying for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-2 over No. 23-ranked Felicity Maltby. Lommer took advantage of an early break in the second set to send the match to a third. In the third, Lommer was broken in the first game before ripping off four straight games for a commanding 4-1 lead. She dropped just one game the rest of the way to pick up the win.Â
Freshman Alyvia Jones went 3-0 on the weekend after notching a 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 win over Texas Tech's Alex Valenstein. Jones was down 2-0 in the final set before rallying for the 6-4 win.
The biggest comeback of the day belonged to sophomore Lera Patiuk, who won five straight games in the third set to rally from a 5-2 hole against Ohio State's Emma DeCoste. Patiuk went 3-0 on the weekend after the win.
Freshman Bella Lorenzini completed a perfect 3-0 weekend in singles with a 6-1, 6-4 over Ohio State's Andrea Ballinger. Lorenzini did not drop a set all tournament, winning all three matches in straight sets.
Michigan went 2-1 on the doubles court against Arizona State, first getting a 6-0 win from senior Alex Najarian and Jones. After Arizona State notched its own 6-0 win, U-M ended on a winning note when seniors Kara Hall and Mira Ruder-Hook combined for a 6-2 victory when Hall ripped a winner off ASU's serve.
Michigan kicks off the dual-match portion of the season on Sunday (Jan. 21), hosting Kansas at the Varsity Tennis Center at noon.
