
Wolverines Strong in Singles to Begin Michigan Invite

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 10-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team kicked off the Michigan Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 13) at the Varsity Tennis Center, picking up six singles wins and a doubles victory on the first day.
The Wolverines went 6-2 on the singles court against Arizona State and Ohio State, getting straight-set wins from junior Kate Fahey, sophomore Chiara Lommer and freshman Bella Lorenzini.
Sophomore Lera Patiuk picked up a big singles win, knocking off No. 83 Savannah Slaysman of Arizona State in three sets. Patiuk took both the first and third sets by identical 6-1 scores to pick up her first win over a ranked opponent this season.
Senior Kara Hall rallied from a first-set loss, taking a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Ohio State's Andrea Ballinger.
Freshman Alyvia Jones made her Michigan debut, coming away with a 7-5, 6-7 (7), 6-4 win over Arizona State's Tereza Kolarova for the first win of her career.
Michigan picked up one victory on the doubles court, with Hall and Patiuk combining for a 6-4 win over a combined team from Texas Tech and Georgia Tech.
U-M is back in action tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 14) in the second day of the Michigan Invitational. The Wolverines will start with doubles action against Texas Tech at 1 p.m., with singles against Georgia Tech to follow.
