ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team used a dominant offensive performance to ease past visiting Western Ontario in the team's 10-1 exhibition victory Saturday (Sept. 30) at Yost Ice Arena.
Michigan controlled the puck throughout the game, finishing with 60 shots compared to 20 by Western Ontario. Senior Tony Calderone had a strong game for the Wolverines with two goals and an assist, while junior Cooper Marody recorded a goal to go along with three assists. Nine different players scored for Michigan in the win.
Senior forward Dexter Dancs scored a power-play goal just 4:17 into the game shortly after a hooking penalty by Western Ontario. Sophomore Luke Martin and junior Joseph Cecconi tallied assists on the tip-in goal from Dancs. Michigan extended its lead to 2-0 on another power-play goal, this one coming at the 9:28 mark in the first period. Calderone put a shot past the Western Ontario goaltender with Dancs and Marody recording assists.
In his first game in the winged helmet, graduate student Alex Roos scored on an assist from senior Cutler Martin, giving Michigan a 3-0 lead early in the second stanza. Less than two minutes later, sophomore Will Lockwood was hooked on a breakaway, which resulted in a penalty shot. Lockwood proceeded to score on the ensuing penalty shot, using a highlight-reel move to get past the Western Ontario goalie.
With 4:35 left in the second period, Roos delivered a pass to senior Niko Porikos, who scored on a wide-open net, before Calderone extended the U-M lead to 6-0 with his second power-play goal of the game.
The Maize and Blue stayed hot as Marody scored a goal just 53 seconds into the third period to give Michigan a 7-0 lead, with Cecconi and Luke Martin each picking up his second assist of the night on the goal. At the period's 6:48 mark, senior Cutler Martin put a shot past the Western Ontario goalie, the eighth goal of the night for Michigan. Michigan then added a goal from sophomore Jake Slaker, assisted by Cecconi and freshman Josh Norris, to make the score 9-0 in favor of the Wolverines.
At the 11:24 mark, Michigan entered double digits as sophomore James Sanchez scored a power-play goal, assisted by Boka. Just over a minute later, the Mustangs got on the board for their first goal of the game to make the score 10-1.
As has traditionally been done in early exhibition games, Michigan utilized multiple goalies. Sophomore Jack LaFontaine started the game in net and left the game midway through the second period after saving all 11 shots he faced. Sophomore Hayden Lavigne replaced LaFontaine in net and recorded three saves on four shots.
The Wolverines will open the regular season against St. Lawrence on Friday (Oct. 6) at Appleton Arena in Canton, New York, with puck drop at 7 p.m.
