WOLCOTT, Colo. -- With a pair of even-par final rounds by junior Elodie Van Dievoet and senior Kathy Lim, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed with a 295 today (Tuesday, Sept. 27) at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, giving the Wolverine an 888 54-hole total and 10th-place finish in the event at Red Sky Ranch Golf and Country Club.
"It was a bit of a frustrating finish after our great start," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "This course required great green reading and speed control around the greens, and we did not handle that as well as we are capable of. The great news is we did make a lot of birdies, which is super encouraging. It's back to work as we continue a strong push to finish October."
With 18 teams from 18 different conferences competing in Golfweek's event, the Wolverines were able to get off to a strong start as they tied a season best with a 290 first-round team total thanks to Van Dievoet's 69 (-3) and freshman Ashley Kim's even-par 72. With the tally, U-M found itself just a shot out of the lead after the first day.
The next day, the second round reached the seven-hour mark as the Wolverines struggled with a 302 and dropped into a tie for fifth on the leaderboard. The Maize and Blue battled back to post a 295 in the final round but dropped an additional five positions.
Van Dievoet led U-M for the fifth straight 54-hole event dating back to last season as she tied for 11th with a one-over 217 total (69-76-72). The opening 69 (-3) was her eighth career sub-70 number and put her atop the leaderboard, before misses added up in her second round as she posted a 76 and fell to eighth in the 90-player field.
After opening today's final round six-over through eight holes in the shotgun start, Van Dievoet found her stride, rattling off three straight birdies (Nos. 13-15) and recording an eagle on the 18th before making the turn to the front side. A fourth and final birdie on No. 2 drew her to even par.
"What a great display of resilience," said Dowling of Van Dievoet's final round. "She got off to a rough start and was able to right the ship. She will be able to use that experience in her future rounds which is just awesome."
Carding three straight rounds of 74, senior Emily White just missed a top-25 individual finish as she tied for 26th at 222, while Lim tied for 38th at 224 (75-77-72). Rounding out U-M's starting five, Ashley Kim tied for 51st at 227 (72-78-77), while older sister Megan Kim tied for 62nd at 229 (76-76-77).
The Wolverines return to Ann Arbor for two weeks before heading to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, for the Ruth's Chris Invitational at North Carolina's Finley Golf Course. The trip to Tobacco Road, Friday through Sunday, Oct. 13-15, will be the second straight invitation for U-M, which finished 12th in last year's event.
