ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped its Big Ten Conference opener for the first time in seven seasons, as Purdue tallied the game's only goal in the 83rd minute to notch the 1-0 victory Thursday night (Sept. 14) at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines were held scoreless in consecutive matches for the first time since early in the 2015 season, as U-M played to a 0-0 draw with No. 17 Wake Forest in its previous outing.
Shots were 7-3 in Michigan's favor at the half with just one shot on goal for Purdue and two for Michigan. U-M senior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson stopped Purdue's lone shot on goal in the opening half.
Midway through the second half, Purdue earned four of its five total corner kicks in a span of seven minutes, but Jackson and the Wolverines' defense kept the Boilermakers away from the goal.
Michigan seemed to have the upper hand for a good portion of the second half, creating several close chances. Junior Reilly Martin put a free kick into the six-yard box from the right sideline and sophomore Jada Dayne redirected it on frame, but Purdue goalkeeper Katie Luce dove on it before it crossed the line. Then, in the 72nd minute senior/junior Taylor Timko created her own shot just inside the top of the penalty box and hit the crossbar.
The Boilermakers broke through in the 83rd minute when Kylie Hase volleyed a long serve from Hannah Mussallem into the back of the net from the top of the six-yard box. It marked the first goal the Wolverines have conceded in five home matches this season.
Michigan created one final chance in the last seven minutes, but fifth-year senior Ani Sarkisian's header went wide left.
Jackson finished the game with a season-high eight saves, including seven in the second half. Overall, Michigan's defense has allowed just five goals in eight matches this season, recording four shutouts and holding three other opponents to just one goal.
Freshman Samantha DeVecchi earned her first career start and played 74 solid minutes at holding-mid.
Michigan will continue Big Ten play when it hosts Indiana on Sunday (Sept. 17) at 3 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. Sunday's match is the second of a doubleheader with the 18th-ranked U-M men's soccer team, which will face Michigan State at noon.
