SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The 23rd-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team (3-0-2) played to a 1-1 draw with Santa Clara (2-2-1) in double overtime in the opening game of the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday (Sept. 1) at UND's Alumni Stadium. The Wolverines remain unbeaten at 3-0-2 through the first five games.
Michigan produced several chances early on, including one just four minutes in, as fifth-year senior Ani Sarkisian just missed wide right from 15 yards out.
Santa Clara eventually struck first, scoring in the 27th minute, to mark the first time a U-M opponent scored first this season. From 30 yards out, SCU's Maria Sanchez hit the inside of the right post and the ball ricocheted into the left side of the goal.
Both teams had six shots in the first 45 minutes and Santa Clara held the 1-0 edge at the break.
Early in the second half, junior Abby Kastroll spotted up from the top of the 18-yard box and her shot hit the cross bar and bounced straight down, just outside the goal line and was cleared away.
Kastroll kept pressuring, creating several chances until she broke through in the 65th minute. Freshman Sarah Stratigakis got the ball in Michigan's half of the field and played a long ball over the top for Kastroll to run onto -- Kastroll took a touch just outside the box and fired a shot into the lower left corner to tie the game 1-1.
With seconds left in regulation, junior Reilly Martin crossed a ball to Sarkisian, who volleyed it in as time expired, but she was called offsides and the goal was called off, sending the game to overtime. Michigan held an 11-8 advantage in shots in the second half.
Neither team could manage the game-winning goal during the two 10-minute overtime periods and the Wolverines earned the draw for the second time in three games (Ole Miss, Aug. 25).
Senior goalkeeper Sarah Jackson played all 110 minutes in goal for U-M, making four saves.
Kastroll is now second on the team in points with six on two goals and two assists, while Stratigakis is tied for third with her two goals and one assist.
Michigan will wrap up action at the Notre Dame Invitational when it faces No. 7 South Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 3, at 2:30 p.m. It will mark the first meeting between the Wolverines and the Gamecocks in program history.
