Kyle Mueller (Feb. 28)
Big Ten Golfer of the Week -- Following his rally victory at the Southwestern Jones Invitational, senior Kyle Mueller was named the Big Ten's Golfer of the Week. He earns his fifth career Golfer of the Week honor and first of the season.
With frost and rain delays slowing play the entire two days of the event, it did not stop Mueller as he tallied 17 total birdies during the 54 holes. He led the field in par-4 scoring (3.93, -2) -- the only sub-par golfer -- and was six-under on par 5s. Following a two-hour frost delay in the opening round, Mueller carded a 71 (-1) to position himself among the top three individually.
Before the day's second 18 was called due to darkness, he was even through 11 holes putting him in second with seven remaining. With Mueller and the field returning to finish the second round after yet another delay this morning, he posted a second straight 71 (-1) to finish 36 holes three shots back of Tennessee's Lorenzo Scalise. Moving straight into the final round, a run of four straight birdies on the back nine (Nos. 14-17) and another three straight on the front (Nos. 4-6), Mueller closed with a 66 (-6), while Scalise bogeyed his final hole yielding the title to Mueller, who won with a 208 (71-71-66, -8).
Kyle Mueller, Ian Kim, Nick Carlson (Aug. 30)
Big Ten Preseason Honors List -- Seniors Kyle Mueller and Ian Kim along with junior Nick Carlson represent Michigan on the Big Ten Preseason Honors List.
After record-setting campaigns his first two seasons, Mueller did not disappoint last season, leading the Wolverines in seven of the 13 events, winning two of them. With a 71.36 per round average, he broke his own program record set last season (71.72). Mueller is the only Wolverine to finish a season with a sub-72 average in program history. Helping the Wolverines to their third straight NCAA regional appearance, he missed advancing to the NCAA Finals by a single sot.
Mueller became the 10th Wolverine to earn All-America accolades and the first in six years. After his All-Big Ten first team honor, he became just the second Wolverine in program history to earn three conference citations, joining Michael Harris. For his career, Mueller has started 37 straight events, producing 16 top-10 individual finishes.
Carlson started all 13 events a season ago, winning his first collegiate event after a playoff win at the season-opening Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 19-20). He followed that nearly a month later tying with teammate Kim for low medalist honors at the Dayton Flyer Invitational (Oct. 17-18). Carlson posted a career-best 72.53 scoring average. Kim started eight events and closed with a 77.90 scoring average in his first season with the Wolverines after transferring from Idaho.
