OXFORD, Miss. -- The 23rd-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team battled through 110 minutes of physical soccer and eventually played to a 1-1 draw with Ole Miss on Friday (Aug. 25) at Ole Miss Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines remain unbeaten at 2-0-1 through the first three games.
For the third straight game, Michigan scored in the first eight minutes of play. Six minutes into the match, the Wolverines were awarded a corner kick and sophomore Brooke Cilley's serve found the head of senior/junior Taylor Timko at the back post and then junior Abby Kastroll redirected into the right corner of the goal at 6:16.
Cilley, who is the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, has assisted on five of Michigan's seven goals this season and Timko has scored or assisted on five goals.
Both teams hit the post once in the first 45 minutes, including sophomore Jada Dayne's header that hit the inside of the left post and bounced out following a free kick from junior Reilly Martin in the 35th minute.
Overall, Ole Miss outshot Michigan, 7-4, in the first half and U-M goalkeeper Sarah Jackson made four saves to keep the Rebels scoreless.
In the 57th minute, Ole Miss netted the equalizer. Off a free kick, the Rebels' initial shot attempt was tipped off the crossbar by Jackson, but Gabby Little was there to head in the rebound near the goal line.
Ole Miss continued to pressure for the remainder of regulation, getting off a total of eight shots in the second half, but six were off target.
The game headed to overtime with the score tied 1-1. With just over a minute to go in the first overtime period, OM's Alley Houghton had a one-on-one situation with Jackson, but the U-M keeper charged in time to make the sliding save.
The Maize and Blue had a few close opportunities in the box in the second overtime period, but Rebel goalkeeper Marnie Merritt made a point-blank save on a Kastroll chance and an Ole Miss defender cleared the ball off the line on a scramble in the box.
Jackson finished the game with seven saves, matching her season high from the season opener against Washington.
Freshman Nicki Hernandez made her Michigan debut late in the first half, playing 20 minutes off the bench in the midfield.
Michigan will now return home to host Toledo on Sunday (Aug 27) at 8 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. Sunday is Family Day at UMSS, and kids are encouraged to dress up as their favorite prince or princess, as U-M women's soccer will have famous character cutouts on the concourse prior to the match. Kids will be able to select a free Pirate Patch or Glitter Wand upon entry while supplies last.
