ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior/junior Taylor Timko rattled off four goals to lead the University of Michigan women's soccer team to a dominant shutout win over Western Michigan, 5-0, on Friday (Aug. 11) in its second and final exhibition contests of 2017 at U-M Soccer Stadium.
The Wolverines outshot the Broncos, 22-2, limiting WMU to just one shot in each half.
Michigan held an 11-1 advantage in shots in the first half, creating opportunities early and often. In the 27th minute, U-M earned a corner kick and junior Reilly Martin's serve was headed on target by freshman Nicki Hernandez, but WMU goalkeeper Stephanie Heber got a hand on it to tip it over the bar. Martin got another chance at a corner kick, and her corner was met at the back post by Timko, who volleyed it out of the air to give Michigan a 1-0 lead in the 28th minute.
The score stood at 1-0 at the halftime break, but the Wolverines came out firing in the final 45 minutes. Just 39 seconds into the second half, junior/sophomore Sura Yekka crossed a ball from the left flank and Timko once again volleyed it out of the air just inside the far post to put the Maize and Blue up 2-0.
The Wolverines struck again just three minutes later, as junior Abby Kastroll scored an unassisted goal, beating WMU keeper Hannah Sargent from 14 yards out.
Timko's memorable night continued in the 71st minute, when she cleaned up freshman Emma Cooper's rebound off the post to complete the hat trick. Western Michigan goalkeeper Savannah Rembold tipped the ball into the crossbar, but Timko was waiting to pounce on the rebound.
Seven minutes later, Timko intercepted the ball just over midfield, carried the ball inside the top of the box, and fired a line drive past Rembold to give her a total of four goals on the night and help the Wolverines cruise to the 5-0 victory.
Michigan senior goalkeeper Megan Hinz earned the start in goal and played the first 71 minutes, while fellow classmate Sarah Jackson entered the match with 19 minutes remaining and preserved the clean sheet. Neither goalie was forced to make a save.
Several Wolverines saw game action today with a total of 21 players taking the field, including six freshmen. Newcomers Sarah Stratigakis, Hernandez and Cooper each started.
Michigan will officially kick off the 2017 season when it welcomes Washington to Ann Arbor on Friday (Aug. 18) for an 8 p.m. contest.
