
Big Ten Names 81 Wolverines as Distinguished Scholars

ROSEMONT, Ill. -- The Big Ten Conference office announced the 2016-17 Distinguished Scholars on Wednesday (June 28), with 80 University of Michigan student-athletes earning recognition for their work in the classroom over the last year.
The 81 Distinguished Scholars are the most in school history, 15 more than the previous record of 66 set last year. It is the seventh straight year U-M has increased its total with 66 in 2016, 57 in 2015, 55 in 2014, 53 in 2013, 49 in 2012 and 37 in 2011.
The list includes student-athletes who recorded a minimum grade-point average of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. The Wolverines' list is comprised of 25 men and 55 women across 23 sports. Women's track and field led all programs with 11 selections.
Leading the way for U-M is NCAA Elite 90 Award winner PJ Ransford (men's swimming and diving) and CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year Erin Finn (women's track and field). Nicole Artz (women's gymnastics) was also a CoSIDA Academic All-American, joining Ransford and Finn.
Ten individuals recorded an unblemished 4.0 GPA over the last academic year. They are Finn (women's cross country and track and field), Kieran Gallagher (women's cross country and track and field), Grace Choi (women's golf), Alec Krystek (men's gymnastics), Artz (women's gymnastics), Margaret Metzger (women's lacrosse), Lexie Beemer (rowing), Kaitlin Wright (rowing), Ransford (men's swimming and dving) and Will Sheeran (men's track and field).
