ATHENS, Ga. -- Sophomore Brienne Minor of the University of Michigan women's tennis team is headed to the national championship match of the NCAA Singles Championship after rallying for a three-set semifinal win on Sunday (May 28) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex. Minor is the first Wolverine in school history to advance to the national championship.
Minor rallied for a 6-7 (5), 7-5, 6-0 win over No. 15 Sydney Campbell of Vanderbilt to run her winning streak to seven matches. Minor broke Campbell to start the first set, but Campbell answered with four straight games to take a 4-1 lead. It was then Minor's turn for a run as she ripped off four games of her own to grab a 5-4 lead and head back to serve for the match. She was broken as the set became tied at 5-5. Campbell held on her serve, and Minor fought off two match points to send it to a breaker.
Minor led throughout the opening points of the tiebreaker until Campbell knotted the breaker at 5-5 winning the longest point of the day. Campbell won the final two points to take the first set and early lead.
In the second, Minor took a 3-1 lead following a break of Campbell, but she returned the favor right back to get on serve in the next game at 3-2. Minor held to regain a 4-3 lead, coming through on a deuce point to keep the set on serve. The two stayed on serve over the next several games, with Minor putting an ace up the middle to seal a 6-5 lead and send Campbell back to the service line. Minor raced out to a 40-15 lead in the game, and Campbell double faulted on the next point to seal a 7-5 Michigan win in the second set.
It was all Minor in the third set as the sophomore did not drop a game in a 6-0 win that took about 20 minutes to complete.
With the win, Minor runs her singles record to 31-6 on the season.
