ATHENS, Ga. -- The sophomore pair of Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey each picked up first-round wins for the University of Michigan women's tennis team on the opening day of action (Wednesday, May 24) in the NCAA Singles Championship at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Minor rallied for a three-set win, winning the final two sets against No. 21 Sinead Lohan in a rematch of last year's first-round match. In the first set, both players held serve through the first three games. Minor was broken on a deuce point to go down 3-1, starting a streak of five straight breaks of serve between the two. Lohan finally held serve in the set's ninth game, taking a 6-3 win.
In the second set, Minor broke Lohan on a deuce point and held in her next service game for a 4-1 advantage. Minor ripped off three straight points in the final game of the set, holding serve for a 6-3 victory.
Minor fell in a 2-0 hole to start the final frame but ripped off four straight games to take a 4-2 lead. Lohan held at 4-3, but Minor answered right back with a hold of her own to remain up a break at 5-3. With Lohan back to serve, Minor took a 40-30 lead and made good on her first match point to take a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.
Fahey cruised in her first-round win, knocking off No. 35 Jessie Aney in straight sets. Fahey endured two rain delays during her first set, eventually taking the frame at 6-1. Fahey went up a break at 2-1 and never looked back, breaking Aney in the set's final game to take the win.
Aney broke Fahey to start the second set, but Fahey returned the favor in the next game, jump starting a four-game spurt for the Wolverine. Aney held to get within 4-2, but Fahey took the next two games to seal the 6-1, 6-2 win. It is the 34th win of the season for Fahey, moving her into fifth place on the single-season list.
Minor and Fahey will play again tomorrow (Thursday, May 25) in the second round. In addition, Fahey will pair up with Alex Najarian in the doubles tournament.
