SUGAR GROVE, Ill. -- As cold temperatures and strong winds swept through Rich Harvest Farms for the second straight stroke-play round of the NCAA Championships, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted its second straight 315 championship team total today (Sunday, May 21) and fell seven positions to 16th with a 630 championship total.
As storms cancelled the true second round yesterday (Saturday, May 20), the Wolverines find themselves 11 shots back from finishing in the top eight and advancing to team match play for the team national title. U-M will play the final 18 holes on Monday morning (May 22) along with Michigan State and Duke at 7:51 a.m. CDT off the 10th tee.
"I really liked the fight in our team," said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We had some nice stretches that helped build momentum, especially down the stretch today. The wind did get the best of us a little bit. We made some big numbers, which can happen out here. You really needed to flight your ball properly with this wind. However, we did manage to handle that and the hard stuff, with the winds; it was just the putting that let us down. We didn't putt that well as a team.
"We've just got to take the positives away from today," added Dowling. "We need a little bit of help from the field in front of us. We are going to be one of the first team's off in the morning, and if we shoot a good number, anything can happen. We haven't come close to playing at our best and know that the team is pretty fired up to make that happen tomorrow."
After posting a championships first-round best even-par 72 on Friday (May 19), sophomore Elodie Van Dievoet could not capitalize with her putter in today's second round as she posted a second-round 79 and remained among the top 15 individually as she is tied for 14th with her 151 total.
The day's best round belonged to junior Emily White's 77. With birdies on Nos. 13 and 16, she was one under with two holes remaining on her opening nine holes. However, she found water on the 17th, yielding a triple bogey, and a missed chip on the 18th had her make the turn three over. Missed chances on Nos. 1 and 3 elevated her to five over, before she found a groove, parring her final six holes to post the 77. Overall, she is tied for 45th with 156 total.
Senior Grace Choi added the second-best tally with her 78 as she is tied for 59th at 158, while freshman Alisa Snyder and junior Megan Kim each posted 81s and are tied for 107th (84-81/165) and tied for 114th (85-81/166), respectively.
Posting the 24-team field's lowest team total for the second straight day, Northwestern remains atop the leaderboard with a 599 (301-298). Kent State (303-304) is second at 607), while Stanford is third at 609 (311-298). Ohio State (610), Baylor (611), South Carolina (613), USC (618) and Miami (Fla.)
