Carlson, Mueller in Top 10; U-M Ninth with 18 to Play at Regional

» For the second straight day, Michigan finds itself in ninth place after conclusion of play at the NCAA Washington Regional.
» Rain plagued the second round, as the participants sat through a 90-minute delay before the start of play and another 45-minute delay while U-M was on its front nine.
» Kyle Mueller and Nick Carlson are tied for seventh with 142 totals. Mueller shot a second straight even-par 71 on Tuesday, while Carlson had a second-round 74.
» Michigan is 10 shots behind fifth-place Alabama heading into the final 18 holes. The top five teams and top individual not on an advancing team will qualify for the NCAA Finals.

SAMMAMISH, Wash. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team maintained its ninth-place standing after two rounds of the NCAA Washington Regional Tuesday (May 16) at the Aldarra Golf Club. Weather was a big storyline as there was a 90-minute delay prior to the start of the round and another hour delay during the team's front nine.
"Today was a total grind because of the weather and multiple delays," head coach Chris Whitten said. "The golf course took a lot of rain last night, and there was standing water on many of the greens. We were at the golf course for over 10 hours to play a round, and I thought we could have been a little bit sharper with our shots, but the guys were mentally focused and ready to go when it was time. We know we haven't played our best golf yet, and we're going to give it a great run tomorrow."
Junior Kyle Mueller had the team's best round of the day, shooting a second straight even-par 71, placing him in a tie for seventh. Mueller double bogeyed the 11th hole, his second of the day, but rallied for three birdies on his front nine and another one on the back.
"Kyle hit some of the best shots I've seen him play in several weeks so I'm excited to see what he can do tomorrow," Whitten commented. "He was very solid with his round despite a bad start in between delays on wet greens."
Sophomore Nick Carlson is tied with Mueller after his second-round 74, which included a trio of birdies on the day. Both Carlson and Mueller are six behind individual leader Justin Suh (Southern Cal), who has rounds of 68-68=136.
Senior Bryce Evon is tied for 24th after his second-round score of 76, good for a 145 total. Like Carlson, Evon had three birdies on the day. Senior Tom Swanson shot a 77 in the second round, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 seventh hole.
USC leads the team race with a five-under 563, one shot in front of Florida State and six ahead of Kent State. The Wolverines will be chasing the top five for a chance to advance to the NCAA Finals in Sugar Grove, Illinois. Alabama currently is fifth with a 580 total, 10 shots ahead of the Maize and Blue.
Michigan will be paired with Texas A&M and San Diego State for the final round Wednesday (May 17), going off the 10th tee at 7:30 a.m. PDT.
