REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan rowing team split the opening day of competition at the Pac-12 Challenge, racing on Saturday (April 1) on Redwood Shores Lake in the team's first west-coast venture of the spring. The Wolverines earned early wins in the morning session against No. 10 Stanford but were unable to duplicate that success against No. 4 Washington in the afternoon session.
Conditions were sunny and pleasant for Michigan's first west-coast regatta of the season, with morning temperatures in the low 60s and afternoon temperatures reaching 80 degrees.
U-M captured both its two wins on the day over the hosting Cardinal, but the Huskies had a strong morning performance of their own, and despite Michigan's 1V8 boat recording a faster time in the second session, the Wolverines were bested in all three afternoon races.
In the morning, the 1V8 boat won the weekend's first race, crossing the finish line in 6:19.0 with a +3.57-second margin on Stanford, and the 2V8 boat followed with a time of 6:28.55 and a +12.33-second win.
In the afternoon, U-M's 1V8 boat improved on its time from the morning but crossed +2.61 seconds behind Washington, and the 2V8 and 1V4 boats were also dealt losses.
