BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Senior Allie Murphy and Keegan McCaffrey of the University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team qualified for next week's NCAA Championships on the three-meter springboard to open the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships on Thursday (March 9) at the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. The team now stands at 12 individual qualifiers.
Murphy finished eighth (595.55) and McCaffrey finished ninth (584.70), grabbing the last two spots of Zone C's allotment for the board. McCaffrey was in 10th place heading into the final round -- one place shy of qualification -- but scored 51.80 on her final dive to move into the top nine. She finished 1.05 points ahead of Northwestern's Olivia Rosendahl for the ninth and final spot.
It will be Murphy's second consecutive berth to the NCAA Championships and the first for McCaffrey.
Freshman Kristen Hayden also qualified for the semifinals, finishing 12th (569.20). Should she qualify on one-meter or platform, she would be eligible to dive on three-meter at the NCAA Championships by virtue of scoring a top-12 finish.
The divers will be back in action tomorrow (Friday, March 10) on the one-meter springboard and its eight qualifying spots. Competition begins at 1 p.m.
