OAK RIDGE, Tenn. -- The University of Michigan rowing team kicked off its 2017 season with an impressive day of racing at the University of Louisville's Oak Ridge Cardinal Invitational on Saturday (March 11). The Wolverines won all eight races they competed in, showcasing depth over morning and afternoon during the first of two days of competition on Melton Hill Lake.
It is the second straight year in which U-M has competed at the Cardinal Invitational, which is in its sixth year of existence. This morning provided overcast, somewhat windy conditions on the water, with colder temperatures making for a stiff beginning to the weekend. In the afternoon session, the sun came out for a warmer setting around 40 degrees and the wind died down.
"I thought all our crews rowed better this afternoon than we did this morning," said head coach Mark Rothstein.
"We just didn't handle the racing great this morning. I think a little bit of that was nerves and some of it was adapting to 2K racing, which we haven't done since last spring, so I was pleased to see the level of improvement that we saw this afternoon. Hopefully, we will see some more of that improvement tomorrow morning."
In the second of three morning sessions, Michigan competed against Kansas, Clemson and Louisville. U-M won all four races. The first varsity eight crew finished in 6:24.3, more than 13 seconds ahead of the Clemson Tigers.
U-M's 2V8 (6:34.3), 1V4 (7:17.4) and 2V4 (7:28.1) followed with their own victories.
Michigan raced against Tennessee, Notre Dame and Kansas in the afternoon session. The first varsity eight crew won its second race of the day, finishing in 6:29.0 with a 14-second gap on second-place Notre Dame.
U-M's 2V8 (6:35.3), 1V4 (7:18.5) and 2V4 (7:27.1) closed the day with convincing victories of their own.
U-M will resume action in Oak Ridge on Sunday (March 12) at 9 a.m. in the first morning session. The Wolverines are scheduled to compete against Tennessee, Virginia and Michigan State.
