ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In celebration of the University of Michigan's bright future and storied past in the sports of cross country and track and field, the program is hosting an Alumni Weekend on Jan. 19-21, 2018.
The two-day festivities include the induction of the newest Hall of Fame class on Friday, Jan. 19, followed on Saturday (Jan. 20) by tours of the Wolverines' brand new, state-of-the-art facility that will lead directly into one of the nation's top meets of the year, the Simmons-Harvey Quad.
Alumni will be welcomed back to the new facility on Sunday morning for an opportunity to run on the new track.
"This will be a year with a lot of 'firsts,' with our brand new facility and our men's and women's teams combining into one program, but one of the 'firsts' we are most looking forward to is sharing it all with our alumni for the first time," co-head coach James Henry said. "In a lot of ways, this new building was built on more than a century of greatness in Michigan track and field and cross country, and those who have come through our program in the past should always consider this their home, too."
Friday's activities begin at 6 p.m. with an hour-long reception at the Richard L. Postema Family Golf Course Clubhouse ahead of the Hall of Fame dinner and induction ceremony at 7 p.m. Alumni are encouraged to attend as former Wolverines Todd Steverson, Jeff Porter, Cindy Ofili and Anna (Willard) Grenier reminisce about their careers and receive the program's highest individual honor.
Alumni are invited on Saturday morning to attend a breakfast at the new facility -- located on State Street, south of the main athletics campus -- at 9:30 a.m. -- complete with a welcome from the Michigan coaching staff -- before embarking on tours of the complex. Those in attendance will not only see the world-class indoor track but will also get behind-the-scenes looks at other areas of the facility, including strength and conditioning, nutrition, athletic training and more.
Those tours will conclude as the Wolverines start their Simmons-Harvey Quad showdown against rivals Ohio State and Michigan State, as well as national power Arkansas. The meet is tentatively scheduled for an 11 a.m. start.
Following the conclusion of the competition, approximately 4:30 p.m., alumni will be invited trackside for a post-meet social with current student-athletes and fans.
Alumni are invited to return to the facility Sunday morning for a run on the brand new track. A time for Sunday's event is yet to be determined.
Formal RSVP invitations will be sent via email to all alumni of the program in in the coming weeks. In the meantime, those alumni who did not receive a "Save the Date" email from Director of Student-Athlete Alumni Relations Jeff Porter should contact him at 734-615-6202 or jiporte@umich.edu.
