LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team fell to No. 9 Maryland, 5-1, in the second NCAA semifinal Friday evening (Nov. 17) at Louisville's Trager Stadium. The loss snapped the Wolverines' 18-game win streak and ended their 2017 season.
Maryland set the tone early, outshooting the Wolverines, 4-1, and outcornering them, 1-0, in the first half. The Terrapins took the lead just 4:00 into the contest when Madison Maguire got her stick on a shot and redirected it to the far-side corner of the cage. Maryland then converted on its first penalty-corner opportunity late in the half, at 24:22, as Bodil Keus found the board with the direct shot to provide the Terps a 2-0 halftime advantage.

Freshman Kayla Reed charged the circle from the right side, pulled the Terp goalkeeper out of position, and fed the ball across the goalmouth, where Bennett tipped it in.
Maryland responded quickly, however, taking advantage of a lucky bounce at 50:29 when a ball came in from outside the circle, hit the post and bounced back into play in front of the cage, where Linnea Gonzales tapped in the rebound. The Terrapins added one more on a penalty corner with U-M senior goalkeeper Sam Swenson pulled, scoring on a drag flick high at 63:46.
In all, Maryland outshot the Wolverines, 9-5, while Michigan posted a 3-2 advantage in penalty corners. Swenson earned a pair of saves, and freshman Halle O'Neill added a defensive save late. The Terps' Sarah Holliday stopped three of four U-M shots on goal.
