Wolverines Use Late Surge to Overpower Southern Miss

» Jon Teske had a career night, recording his first double-double with 10 points, on 5-for-5 shooting, and 11 rebounds. A U-M player has registered a double-double in all three games this season, as Moritz Wagner accomplished the feat in each of the first two games.
» After trailing 33-32 at the half, U-M outscored the Golden Eagles 29-14 in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the field (11-for-22) while holding USM to 26 percent (6-for-23) in the final 20 minutes.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team dominated the second half to erase a one-point halftime deficit and earn a 61-47 win over Southern Mississippi on Thursday night (Nov. 16) inside Crisler Center. The win keeps U-M unbeaten at 3-0 and is the Wolverines' third victory at home in the last six days.
Four Michigan players scored in double-digits in the win: senior Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (14), senior Duncan Robinson (12), junior Moritz Wagner (12) and sophomore Jon Teske (10).
Teske had a career night as he recorded a career-high 10 points and 11 rebounds en route to his first career double-double. He went a perfect 5-for-5 from the field. This marks the third consecutive game U-M has had a player record a double-double, as Wagner accomplished the feat in each of the first two games.
After trailing 33-32 at the half, the Wolverines came out swinging in the second half, outscoring the Golden Eagles, 29-14, behind 50 percent shooting from the field (11-for-22). Michigan's defense held Southern Miss to 26 percent shooting (6-for-23) after halftime.
Six different Wolverines scored in the second half, highlighted by three triples from Robinson. The Wolverines used a 15-0 run in the middle of the half, from 14:05 to 6:49, to regain a strong lead over Southern Mississippi, 51-40. Teske's jumper at the 6:49 mark gave him 10 points, which prefaced his first career double-double that came at 4:25 when he grabbed his 10th rebound. The largest lead of the game for Michigan came at the 4:07 mark after junior Charles Matthews hit a triple to put U-M up 59-43.
The first half was a game of runs. After the Golden Eagles put up the first two points of the game, the Wolverines went on a 20-4 run to end up on top, 20-6, at 10:02. The run was highlighted by two triples and a layup from Abdur-Rahkman in addition to Wagner going 4-for-4 at the charity stripe.
In the middle of the half, Teske added six consecutive points for U-M, giving the Maize and Blue a 22-15 lead. The Wolverines then experienced a 3:30 scoring drought, allowing the Golden Eagles to come within seven, 22-15, with 6:44 to go in the first half. Southern Miss then used a 13-3 run to tie the game, 25-25, at the 2:20 mark, en route to a one-point lead at halftime. U-M led for 17 and a half minutes of the first half but faced a one-point deficit after the first 20 minutes.
The Wolverines had 17 bench points in the game, led by 10 from Teske, in addition to 12 points from U-M's eight offensive rebounds. The Maize and Blue shot 49 percent from the field (23-for-47) and assisted on 56 percent of its field goals (13-of-23).
Michigan will now turn its attention to the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, where it will take on LSU in the opening round on Monday (Nov. 20) at 6:30 p.m. HST live on ESPNU. The Wolverines will play three games in three days at the Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Hawai'i.
