STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team recorded a season-high five goals en route to a 5-2 win over Penn State on Saturday night (Oct. 28) at Pegula Ice Arena. The forward line of Tony Calderone, Dexter Dancs and Cooper Marody recorded three points each in the winning effort.
Michigan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead 4:10 into the contest when junior forward Marody head-manned the puck up to senior captain Calderone, who proceeded to pick up his own rebound for his second goal of the season. Classmate Dancs was also credited with an assist on the play.
The Nittany Lions were granted two power-play opportunities late in the opening stanza -- one being a five-minute man-advantage at the 7:10 mark on a boarding call on Michigan. Despite multiple opportunities, the Wolverines were able to keep the hosts off the scoreboard and take a one-goal advantage into the first intermission.
Two consecutive goals in the second period within a minute of each other extended the Wolverines' lead to 3-0. It was the Michigan special teams unit that capitalized on a power-play chance 14:48 into the second period when Calderone ripped a shot from the slot off a feed from Dancs. Nine seconds later it was junior forward Brendan Warren with a shot from the top of the circles off a faceoff win by sophomore forward Adam Winborg at the 14:57 mark.
Penn State erased the shutout late in the second stanza when Nate Sucese took a shot in front of a crowded net off a pass from Trevor Hamilton that cut the Maize and Blue lead to 3-1 after two periods of play.
The Wolverines exploded for two goals early in the third period to erase any comeback attempt by the Nittany Lions. It was Dancs' turn to find the back of the twine, picking up a loose puck off a rebound in the slot and shooting one past the glove of the PSU netminder. Less than a minute later, sophomore forward Nick Pastujov scored his first goal of the season on a wraparound to give Michigan a four-goal cushion.
Penn State got on the board again 9:27 into the final period on a Nikita Pavlychev marker but was unable to mount a comeback attempt despite pulling its goaltender for most of the remaining minutes of the third period.
Sophomore netminder Hayden Lavigne recorded a season-high 42 saves while picking up his second win of the season between the pipes.
The forward line of Calderone (2G, 2A), Dancs (3G, 2A) and Marody (1G, 5A) recorded a combined 15 points on the weekend.
The Maize and Blue improved to 11-10-0 against Penn State and 3-6 in State College. This was the Wolverines' first win at Pegula Ice Arena since January 2016 -- the other being their first contest in the building in February 2014.
Michigan will return home for a two-game series against Ferris State on Thursday and Friday (Nov. 2-3). Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. for both contests. Michigan defeated the Bulldogs, 2-1, last season on the road, marking the 70th win over Ferris State in program history. U-M is 70-30-4 in the all-time series against Ferris State and 43-10-2 at home. The Wolverines have not lost to Ferris State at home in their last 13 matchups, with the most recent loss coming on Feb. 25, 2006, in overtime. Since then, Michigan has recorded 11 wins and two ties against the Bulldogs in Ann Arbor. » Tickets
