WOLVERINE BITES
• Michigan is 2-0 all-time vs. Louisville, winning 237-116 in 2014 and all three segments of a unique "tripleheader" last year in Ann Arbor.
• The Wolverines are ranked 12th in the first College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) poll, released on Oct. 4. The next poll will be out on Oct. 24. [ Poll ]
• The distance freestyle group looks to be one of the strongest units on the team yet again. Through the early parts of the season, Felix Auböck and PJ Ransford have the top two times in the nation in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Also in the ranks is Ricardo Vargas, a 2016 Olympian from Mexico, who could make his collegiate debut this weekend.
• Paul Powers enters the weekend tied for the second-fastest time in the nation in the 50-yard freestyle (20.04). There is great depth in the sprint freestyle events between Powers, rising sophomore James Jones, graduate student transfer James Peek and freshman Luiz Gustavo Borges.
• Through one competition, four of the five divers have already qualified for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships in March. Ross Todd and Jake Herremans have their scores for both one-meter and three-meter, while Steven Anderson and Chris Canning have qualified on one-meter only. [ Diving Scores ]
• The sophomore class is off to a great start with four swimmers holding team-best times: James Jones (100-yard freestyle), Felix Auböck (500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle), Jacob Montague (100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard IM) and Miles Smachlo (100-yard butterfly, 200-yard butterfly).
• Jacob Montague (Swimmer), Jake Herremans (Diver) and Ross Todd (Freshman) earned the first batch of weekly awards from the Big Ten back on Oct. 4. [ 2017-18 Awards & Honors ]
SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
The Cardinals, ranked No. 7 in the first CSCAA poll, are 0-1 on the season, suffering a dual-meet loss to Notre Dame on Oct. 7. Last year, Louisville finished second in the ACC and was 11th at the NCAA Championships. Senior Carlos Claverie was an All-American in the 200-yard breaststroke while fellow returnees Marcelo Acosta (1,650-yard freestyle), Etay Gurevich (400-yard IM) and Zach Harting (200-yard butterfly) all individually were All-America honorable mentions.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines opened the 2017-18 season with a 203-91 win over Oakland back on Sept. 29. The two teams were joined by Calvin College the following day for the Michigan Water Carnival. [ Oakland | Water Carnival ]
