UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- Saturday's Saginaw Valley State Jets Pizza Invitational was an opportunity for many of the No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team's athletes to gear up for the home stretch of the season in February.
It was an opportunity many did not pass up as the Wolverines won five events, some of which were swept by Michigan athletes as far down as seven athletes.
"We're getting into February effort. Giving a good effort was what January was for, February now is about results," U-M women's head coach James Henry said. "We've got to start turning it up, the competition will be better in the homestretch heading toward the conference championships and this is the opportunity to post some marks that reflect what kind of team we are."
Bailey Baker kicked things off Friday with a career-best 18.28m (59-11.75) in weight throw to lead a 1-2-3-4 sweep alongside Courtney Jacobsen, Kayla Deering and Meagan Malloy. Deering was also second in the shot put at 14.12m (46-4), while Baker was fifth.
Aaron Howell and Jada Wimberly swept the top two spots in the high jump as Howell cleared 1.68m (5-6), and Wimberly got over 1.63 (5-4.25).
After two strong 600-meter races to kick off her collegiate career, Julia Hall won her U-M debut at 400 meters in 55.71, claiming the race by more than half a second.
The Maize and Blue also had success in the 4x400 relay, which was won by a second in 3:53.42 behind the quartet of Lauren Rodriguez, Haley Meier, Gina McNamara and Jade Harrison.
Rounding out the wins for the current Wolverines was McNamara at 800 meters. The senior took the win in 2:13.12.
Courtney Munley, competing unattached for Michigan, also posted a win in the mile. She was followed by five Michigan women who broke the sub-five-minute barrier, including runner-up Meier, third-place Rachel Coleman and fourth-place McNamara.
Sarah Uhlian also posted a strong runner-up showing Friday night in the pole vault at 3.70m (11-11.25).
