COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball team held a one-point lead with 45 seconds remaining in the third quarter, but the No. 3-ranked Maryland Terrapins used a 17-4 run over the next eight minutes to take control en route to an 83-70 win over U-M on Thursday night (Jan. 19) inside the Xfinity Center.
Junior Katelynn Flaherty led the way for Michigan, turning in 30 points on 10-for-20 shooting from the floor, including four triples. Freshman Kysre Gondrezick joined Flaherty in double figures with 13 points, with sophomore Hallie Thome going for nine points and four rebounds. Junior Maria Backman came off the bench to grab eight boards in 11 minutes to go with two points.
The teams went back and forth in the third quarter, with Flaherty pacing the Wolverines with 13. Gondrezick hit a triple in the closing minute of the third quarter to give Michigan a 61-60 lead, but Maryland scored the final four points of the frame, including a buzzer-beating heave, to hit the fourth quarter with a 64-61 advantage.
The Terps continued their run into the fourth quarter, taking a 76-65 lead with a little more than four minutes remaining. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way as Michigan dropped the 13-point contest.
Michigan closed the second quarter on a 9-0 run, capped by a deep Flaherty triple with 30 seconds remaining to send the teams to the break with Maryland up, 39-35. Flaherty led the way for the Maize and Blue with 14 points, with Thome and senior Siera Thompson each scoring five points.
Maryland scored the first eight points of the second quarter, forcing a Michigan timeout at the 8:30 mark facing a 26-19 deficit. A senior Danielle Williams triple cuts the lead in half on U-M's next possession, followed by a Gondrezick layup to pull Michigan back within one, but Maryland answered again. The Terps led by as many as 13 in the period, before Michigan went on the run to end the quarter.
Michigan came out firing in the first quarter, leading by as many as eight in the frame. Thompson nailed a triple off a junior Jillian Dunston offensive rebound to give Michigan a 12-6 lead with 4:48 left in the first quarter. Flaherty's triple with 4:12 on the first-quarter clock gave U-M its largest lead of the game.
U-M finishes a two-game road swing on Sunday (Jan. 22), heading to Nebraska to take on the Huskers. Tip is set for 2 p.m. CST from Lincoln.
