
Smiddy, DeLoof, Brunemann Named to U.S. Swimming National Team

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Junior women's swimmer Clara Smiddy and alums Ali DeLoof (2013-16) and Emily Brunemann (2006-08, 2010) were named to the 2016-17 U.S. National Team following an announcement from USA Swimming on Friday (Sept. 9).
Smiddy and DeLoof were named to the team in the 100-meter backstroke, while Brunemann was named in the open water 10K. DeLoof, though done with collegiate eligibility, will continue to train with Club Wolverine as she finishes studies for her undergraduate degree. Brunemann continues to train but is expected to step away from the sport before the end of the calendar year.
The 2016-17 USA Swimming National Team features the top six athletes in each Olympic event from the combined results of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Swimming, 2016 Olympic Games and 2016 U.S. Open. They are eligible to represent the United States in international events for the upcoming year, including the FINA Short Course World Championships in December.
In all, the University of Michigan swimming and diving program placed seven swimmers (men and women) on the national team: Smiddy, DeLoof, Brunemann, men's swimmer PJ Ransford and program alums Connor Jaeger (2011-14), Sean Ryan (2011-14) and Tyler Clary (2008-10). Additionally, Mike Bottom, Josh White and Rick Bishop were named 2016-17 U.S. National Team Coaches.
