LINCOLN, Neb. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team finished its first weekend of Big Ten play with a pair of road wins after defeating Nebraska, 2-1, on Sunday (Sept. 18) at Barbara Hibner Stadium. The Wolverines handed the Cornhuskers their first home loss of the season.

Reilly Martin
Michigan now owns a 7-1-1 lead in the all-time series and has defeated the Cornhuskers in all six meetings since Nebraska joined the Big Ten in 2011.
The Maize and Blue kept its steak alive and scored first in its eighth straight game. U-M has held a halftime lead in four of its eight games, winning three of four, including today.
In the 28th minute, Nebraska was called for a hand ball after a long throw by senior Rosalind Porritt was launched into the box. Michigan was awarded a penalty kick, and sophomore Reilly Martin stepped to the penalty spot and converted her second PK of the season to give U-M a 1-0 lead that stood at intermission.
Porritt's long throw proved to be an asset once again in the second half as she sent a throw over the top for Ani Sarkisian to run on toward the left corner flag. Sarkisian chased it to the touch line, took a few touches into the box and threaded a ball on the turf across of the mouth of the goal, where sophomore Abby Kastroll was there to poke it home with an outstretched leg. It marked Kastroll's second goal in as many games, as she tallied the game-winner at Iowa on Friday (Sept. 16). With the assist, Sarkisian now has four assists on the season and 19 in her career, which is tied for seventh all-time at Michigan in career assists.
Michigan's defense held Nebraska scoreless for 89:52, despite being outshot, 13-6, as Haley Hansen headed in the Huskers' lone goal with eight seconds left on the clock, spoiling what could have been the fourth straight shutouts for the Wolverines. U-M's defense held Husker Jaycie Johnson, who had tallied one goal in each of Nebraska's last four games, to just one shot and zero goals.
Junior goalkeeper Megan Hinz earned her second start of the season and was busy all afternoon, making six saves in the win.
The Wolverines will return to Ann Arbor to host in-state rival Michigan State in their first Big Ten home match of the season on Saturday, Sept. 24. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium. Tickets for that match are selling quickly and fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance by visiting the women's soccer ticket page. All fans with tickets from the Michigan vs. Penn State football game can redeem their ticket stub at the Michigan soccer ticket office to receive free admission, while supplies last.
