ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team secured its most dominant win in eight seasons, exploding for eight goals in the second half en route to a 10-0 decision against in-state rival Central Michigan on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 18) at Phyllis Ocker Field. It marks the Wolverines' fifth straight victory and fourth shutout win of the season.
Michigan earned double-digit goals for just the 10th time in program history as eight different Wolverines found the backboard, including five for the first time this season. Senior/junior Allie Sardo and sophomore Marleise Emrhein posted two goals apiece, while senior Sina Lampe tallied a goal and four assists.
Senior Courtney Enge, who has already matched her career best with a team-leading five goals this season, netted her second game-winner of the weekend just 1:19 into the contest a tipped shot that looped high over CMU goalkeeper Abigail Ebersole.
Sardo netted her first of the season on a broken corner at the 14:53 mark. Freshman Fay Keijer corralled the ball on the left side of the circle, pulled outside and fed a pass to the front of the cage, where Sardo redirected it into the lower right corner to give U-M a 2-0 lead, which held until halftime.
The Wolverines scored eight more in the second half and scored in bursts, netting three in the first four minutes of the half then three more in a four-minute stretch midway through.
Lampe buried a rocketed reverse shot from the top of the circle for her first goal of the season just 56 seconds into the frame and assisted on each of the subsequent two goals from freshman Meg Dowthwaite and graduate student Esther de Leijer. Dowthwaite's goal -- also a reverse shot from across the circle -- was the first of her collegiate career.
Junior Katie Trombetta, one of U-M's top scorers from a year ago, netted her first of the season off a penalty-corner direct shot at the 45:19 mark, before Sardo struck again 12 minutes later, at 57:16, to kick off the Wolverines' second second-half scoring surge. Sophomore Leah Cardarelli fed the ball to Sardo, who swept it to the opposite corner of the cage, and also assisted on senior/junior Carly Bennett's goal just 1:08 later, at 58:24, dishing the ball into the circle, where Bennett stopped it in front, spun and found the lower right corner.
Emrhein tallied each of the last two Michigan goals in the final 10 minutes of play, knocking in a shot from Lampe from near the right post at the 60:39 mark before firing in another hard cross-cage shot to the lower left corner less than six minutes later, at 66:21. The goals are her first of the season.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas, 35-2, and outcornered them, 12-2, in the contest and did not allow them a shot until CMU drew two corners with time expired; both CMU shots were blocked before reaching the cage. Junior Sam Swenson and freshman Claire Stemper combined for the shutout effort, while Central Michigan's Ebersole earned 11 saves, and CMU defenders posted three defensive saves.
