Men's Swimming: 1,500m Freestyle Heats/4x100m Medley Relay Heats/100m Butterfly Final
In his final individual Olympic event, Michael Phelps won a silver medal in the 100-meter butterfly (51.14), his 27th career Olympic medal. Connor Jaeger earned another chance to swim for a medal, as he qualified second overall (14:45.74) for tomorrow's (Saturday, Aug. 13) 1,500-meter freestyle final. Joining him in the race was incoming freshman Felix Auböck (Austria), who finished 42nd (15:36.24). Dylan Bosch also added another event to his slate, swimming the butterfly leg on South Africa's 4x100-meter medley relay, finishing 13th (3:35.50). Bosch was swimming in place of Chad le Clos, who opted to focus on the 100-meter butterfly final later in the evening.

Women's Rowing: Pair Final A
In the Olympic final, Felice Mueller (2009-12) and Grace Luczak (2008) placed fourth in 7:24.77, just off the podium in a race that featured the world's best crews. Mueller and Luczak put in another strong performance, jumping out into second place through 1,000 meters then falling behind New Zealand and Denmark in the final stages of the race.

Women's Soccer: Canada 1, France 0 (Quarterfinals)
Canada earned a 1-0 shutout victory over France in the Olympic quarterfinals on Friday (Aug. 12) at Mané Garrincha Stadium to advance to the semifinals. For the second straight game, Shelina Zadorsky started and played all 90-plus minutes at center back. Canada produced five shots in the match, with two going on frame, and in the 56th minute Sophie Schmidt broke the stalemate. Janine Beckie crossed the ball and found Schmidt at the back post for the game's only goal. France got off 12 shots in the match but could not avoid the shutout. Canada will now face Germany for the second time in three games in the semifinals on Tuesday (Aug. 16) at 3 p.m. Canada defeated Germany, 2-1, in the final game of the group stage on Tuesday (Aug. 9).

Women's Track & Field: Heptathlon/1,500m Run Heats
Beginning her two-day competition, Uhunoma Osazuwa competed in four events of the heptathlon on Friday. She ran in heat three of the 100-meter hurdles, timing 13.75 seconds for 1,014 points. She picked up 941 points in the high jump, clearing 1.77 meters (5-9.75 ft.) -- the same height she jumped in London four years ago -- and in the shot put, Osazuwa threw a personal-best 13.15 meters (43-1.75 ft.) for an additional 737 points. During the final event of the day, the 200-meter dash, she timed a race of 24.67 seconds to finish Friday action with 3,609 points.
Osazuwa will continue competition tomorrow with the final three events of the heptathlon: the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter dash.

Nicole Sifuentes ran in the opening heats of the 1,500-meter run, racing out of lane one. Sifuentes took the race out early, pacing the field through nearly the first three laps of the race.
Sifuentes took the pack through about 3:04 at the bell lap, maintaining her front positioning, until she was passed on the back straightaway heading into the final turn. However, Sifuentes maintained her composure, knowing what she needed to run in order to advance to Sunday's semifinal and finished with a time of 4:07.43, qualifying on time in seventh place.
