NORMAN, Okla. -- University of Michigan men's golfers Chris O'Neill and Tom Swanson were among 218 Division I golfers named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar recipient today (Thursday, July 21) by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA).
With his second straight selection, O'Neill becomes the fifth Wolverine to earn the prestigious academic honor multiple times, while Swanson's accolades help him become the 13th U-M golfer to earn the award.
Graduating in May with a psychology degree, O'Neill finished his U-M career posting a career-best 72.31 per round average that included 11 sub-par rounds. The PING All-Midwest selection and finalist for the Byron Nelson Award highlighted his scoring shooting a season-best 66 twice -- first round of Desert Mountain (March 5-6) and first round of the MacKenzie (Oct. 12-13). Using one of his 66s, he set a career best for a 54-hole tournament, posting a 204 (-9) tally at the MacKenzie. Not missing a start in his four seasons, he posted 20 top-20 finishes in 47 events, including six among the top five.
Swanson was one of four Wolverines to start every event this season finishing with a career-best 74.79 scoring average that included four sub-par rounds. He shot a career-best 70 twice -- third round of the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 5-6) and first round of the Windon Memorial Classic (Sept. 27-28). Using one of those 70s at the Desert Mountain, he lowered his personal-record 54-hole best with a 212 (-4) total to lead U-M for the second time this season.
In order to eligible for the Division I scholar award, juniors and seniors must carry a minimum of a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average while also averaging under a 76.0 stroke average.
