FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- Senior Chris O'Neill, freshman Nick Carlson and junior Reed Hrynewich each fired rounds of 70 (-2) to lead the University of Michigan men's golf team to a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Franklin Regional today (Wednesday, May 18) at Vanderbilt's Legends Club. Michigan did not qualify for the NCAA Finals, finishing with an eight-over 872 but played the final two rounds of the tournament seven under par. Texas claimed the regional title at 819 (268-271-280), while Vanderbilt was the runner-up at 830 (285-277-268). Houston (293-274-272) and LSU (288-272-279) finished in a tie for third at 839, while Virginia earned the final qualifying spot in fifth at 842 (285-271-286).
"Today felt quite a bit like yesterday's round, although I think the course was playing more difficult," said U-M head coach Chris Whitten. "I was happy to see Chris, Nick and Reed all finish under par for the day."
Teeing off on the 10th hole with Georgetown and UT-Martin, the Wolverines finished under par as a team for the second straight day. In his final round with the Maize and Blue, O'Neill got off to a hot start on the back nine with three birdies and no bogies to make the turn in three under par. After dropping two shots on holes 1-5, O'Neill closed with all pars and a birdie on the eighth hole to finish with a two-under 70 to tie for 45th at 217 (78-69-70/+1).
"I think the guys felt like they were playing for Chris O'Neill this week," Whitten said. "He has meant so much to our program, and we will miss him. I'm glad he went out with two solid rounds. He was our leader in the lineup, and we owe him a huge thank you."
Carlson had a clean scorecard in his final round, starting the day with 15 straight pars before notching birdies on the seventh and ninth holes for a two-under 70 to finish in a tie for 56th at 220 (78-72-70/+4).
Hyrnewich had the shot of the tournament for Michigan, knocking in his second on the 415-yard par-4 eighth hole with a 125-yard gap wedge for an eagle. He added four birdies on the day, offset by four bogies to close with a two-under 70 to tie for 64th at 223 (77-76-70/+7).
Junior Tom Swanson played his final 14 holes one under par to finish with a three-over 75 and a tie for 67th at 225 (75-75-75/+9).
Sophomore Kyle Mueller finished with a seven-over 79 to tie for 56th at 220 (73-68-79/+4).
"Looking back, I'll consider this a successful season that took our program one more step in the right direction," Whitten said. "We love having high expectations and we'll continue to work extremely hard to make an even bigger jump next year."
