COLUMBUS, Ohio -- University of Michigan freshman Anthony McCallum became the 14th Big Ten vault champion in program history and the first in 10 years, scoring a 15.675 on the table en route to a new school record at the 2016 Big Ten Individual Finals Saturday (April 2) at Ohio State's St. John Arena.
In the first rotation of finals, it was junior Anthony Stefanelli who led U-M, securing a second-place finish on floor with a 15.200 to earn All-Big Ten accolades. On pommel horse, senior Nolan Novak closed out his Michigan Big Ten career with a 14.775 to take sixth, while senior Colin Mahar took fourth with a 15.000 on still rings that included a stuck landing.
In the second rotation, the 'Anthony Duo' of Stefanelli and McCallum turned in U-M's best individual performances of the championship, with Stefanelli first marking a 15.275. However, it was McCallum who blew the crowd away, as he nearly stuck his Tsukahara Double Pike for a 15.675. The mark was the top score in the country on the event, and a new school record.
The Wolverines will next prep for the 2016 NCAA Championships, to be held Friday-Saturday, April 15-16, at Ohio State's St. John Arena.
