COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 11 University of Michigan men's gymnastics team, competing in NCAA Qualifying session II, took fifth place with a team score of 422.150 en route to seven gymnasts qualifying into the individual event finals on 14 routines Friday (April 15) at Ohio State's St. John Arena.
The Wolverines began the night on still rings, marking a 71.300. Freshman Anthony McCallum scored a 14.500, while senior Colin Mahar stuck his landing to earn a 15.100 and the second-highest score of the session.
On vault in the second, McCallum asserted himself as a strong contender for the NCAA vault title that will be determined on Saturday night (April 16), taking only a small step on his Tsukahara double pike for a 15.600 as the anchor on the event. He was accompanied by classmate Emyre Cole, who secured a 15.15 to take sixth and earn an event finals berth as the Wolverines scored a solid 74.400, U-M's third-highest score of the year on the event.
Leading by .500 after two rotations, U-M was forced to count two falls on parallel bars and relinquished its top spot on the night after marking a 66.85, its lowest score on the event since the opening meet of the season, and followed with a team total 66.95 on high bar to drop into last place in the session after four rotations. U-M did, however, secure individual qualifiers on parallel bars in junior Dmitri Belanovski (14.450) and sophomore/freshman Marty Strech on parallel bars, while Belanovski also qualified on high bar with a 14.300.
On floor in the fifth rotation, U-M took three of the top four scores on the session, as the Wolverines scored a 72.850. Both Cole and junior Anthony Stefanelli scored matching 15.000s, while Strech took fourth with a 14.75. The rotation was good enough to move U-M into fifth place in the session, a spot that the Wolverines hung on to.
The U-M contingent will compete in session IV of the NCAA Championships Saturday (April 16) at 7 p.m. Under the new NCAA Championship format, the team, all-around and individual championships will all be crowned on the same day.
