
Wolverines Keep Cruising in B1G Play with Win over Maryland

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 11-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team stayed unbeaten in Big Ten action after winning the doubles point and five singles matches in a 6-1 win over Maryland on Sunday afternoon (April 10) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
As was the case yesterday against Rutgers, Michigan took the doubles point with a pair of wins at No. 1 and No. 2. U-M's top pair of freshmen Brienne Minor and Kate Fahey jumped out to a 5-0 advantage.
At No. 2, sophomores Alex Najarian and Mira Ruder-Hook broke on a deuce point for a 2-1 lead. The duo kept the lead the rest of the way to take a 6-2 win on a Najarian ace out wide.
Michigan held concurrent match points at No. 2 and No. 1, but Maryland staved off two match points at the top spot to cut Michigan's lead to 5-2. The Terps held serve in their next game, but Michigan did the same as Minor and Fahey wrapped up a 6-3 win for the doubles point.
U-M took four first sets in singles action as U-M took early leads at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5.
Fahey and Minor held match points at the same time on courts No. 2 and No. 3. It was Fahey who won first, taking a 6-0, 6-2 victory at No. 2. Fahey broke on a deuce point for a 3-2 lead in the second and did not look back in the win.
Moments later, Minor came through with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3. Minor raced out to big leads in each set to take the win.
Senior Ronit Yurovsky clinched the match for the Maize and Blue, winning 6-4, 6-1 at the top spot.
With the match in hand, Najarian split at No. 4 to head to a 10-point tiebreaker. She raced out to a 5-2 lead and took a 10-6 win in the breaker for Michigan's fifth point of the afternoon.
Maryland got its only point of the day with a three-set triumph at No. 6, but Ruder-Hook came back with a three-set win of her own at No. 5 for the 6-1 Michigan victory.
Michigan hits the road again next weekend, first traveling to Iowa on Friday (April 15) to take on the Hawkeyes at 2:30 p.m. CDT.
