ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's tennis team won the doubles point and five singles matches en route to a 6-1 win over Indiana on Saturday afternoon (March 26) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Michigan grabbed the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 1. At the second spot, senior Ronit Yurovsky and freshman Kate Fahey raced out to a 4-0 lead and did not look back in a 6-2 win.
At the top spot, sophomore Mira Ruder-Hook and freshman Brienne Minor recovered from a 3-1 hole to take a 5-3 lead. With Ruder-Hook and Minor holding a deuce point for match point, Michigan's No. 3 pair of junior Sara Remynse and sophomore Alex Najarian fought off an Indiana match point to knot its match at 5-5.
Ruder-Hook and Minor came through on their match point as a Ruder-Hook lob on the return of serve set up a Minor winner at the net for the 6-3 victory.
Fahey put Michigan's second point on the board, grinding out a 6-3 win in the first set before coasting to a 6-0 win in the second for the straight-set victory.
Yurovsky followed right behind her on the next court over, winning a second-set tiebreaker, 7-5, on the heels of a 6-1 win in the first. With the win, Yurovsky is now tied for fifth all-time at Michigan with 104 singles wins.
Ruder-Hook clinched the match for the Maize and Blue in a 7-5, 6-1 win at No. 4. Ruder-Hook broke late for a 6-5 lead in the first, serving it out in the ensuing game. She dropped just one game in the second to pick up the win.
Najarian kept Michigan perfect up to that point, rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 5. Najarian took an early break in the third set before hanging on for the 6-4 victory.
Indiana got its only point of the afternoon with a three-set win at No. 2.
Sophomore Kara Hall completed the scoring for Michigan, rallying for a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 win at No. 6 for the second dual-match win of her career.
Michigan continues Big Ten action tomorrow (Sunday, March 27) against Purdue at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at noon.
