TEMPE, Ariz. -- The No. 22-ranked University of Michigan women's track and field team began a two-day competition at Arizona State University with scoring efforts in two events on Friday (March 25), padding the Big Ten's lead over the Pac-12 Conference at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium.
Junior Corinne Florie placed third in the 5,000-meter run, timing 16:56.93, about five seconds short of a PR and an excellent season-starting race for Florie. Freshman Kayla Keane made her outdoor debut in the event, but did not finish.
In the javelin, Howell set a new PR in her 2016 debut of the event, throwing 41.50 meters (136-2 ft.) to place eighth and add two points to U-M's conference contributions.
Sophomore Bailey Baker was the highest-finishing Wolverine in the hammer throw, landing a new PR on the final attempt of the first round to advance to the nine-woman final. Baker narrowly missed out on scoring, but landed her top mark at 51.47 meters (168-10.25 ft.).
Sophomore Kayla Deering and freshman Maegan McCarthy also competed, with McCarthy making her outdoor debut.
Prieskorn, a native of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, made her Wolverine debut competing in the event.
Action picks back up in Tempe on Saturday (March 26) at 2:30 p.m. PDT with the discus lined up as the first event. Running events begin with the 100-meter hurdles at 6:20 p.m. Plenty of U-M scoring opportunities will come tomorrow as well, with entries in five field events, seven track events and the 4x400-meter relay.
